lux to paris

We'll be taking a "southern" route (skipping Reims--been there) from Luxembourg to Paris in May. We love small towns
/villages and and country estates that have turned into places to stay. We would appreciate any knowledge you might have of the area and any recommendations. I plan on a two day trip.

It might be a bit more southerly than what you are thinking of, but I love Troyes. Beautiful medieval old town, not that many tourists, good food and Champagne. Had a great stay at La Licorne in September, but it was a splurge (close to $250/night).

Very close to Luxembourg, I really like Metz too, but I haven't been in a decade so I don't know about hotels these days.

And since we are on a southerly route...Langres is worth the side trip, and Colombey-Les-2-Eglises is interesting if you like 20th c. French history with the De Gaulle house and memorial.

I didn't like Nancy when I visited at the same time as Metz, but many people do like it, especially if they like Art Nouveau architecture (I do not).

does this mean car? If so, if the rental car is not from France be aware of taking a car into France without a Crit'Air sticker in the window risks problems in urban and suburban areas.
