Luberon Travel Recommendations

We will be driving in from Nice on Wednesday, September 11. We booked a place in the heart of Lourmarin from 9/11-9/15 then we drive to St. Paul de Vence to be closer to the Nice airport for a early flight.

We wanted to post our tentative itinerary in search of any tips/recommendations.

Wednesday: arrive in Lourmarin. Stop in Aix-en-Provence for a few hours / possibly stop at Chateau Le Coste
Thursday: we're hoping to hire someone to take us up to an all day Cotes du Rhone wine road drive. Any recommendations on tour guides/drivers?

Friday: Lourmarin market / explore hill towns in the area.
Saturday: Isle-sur--la-sourge town is on the list and exploring surrounding towns. Roussillon and Fontaine de Vaucluse are on the list to fit in somewhere.
Sunday: Drive to St Paul de Vence to get close to the airport. Maybe stop in Aix-en- Provence or a few places along the way on the drive back.

Would love any e-bike short trips that anyone recommends.
Any recommendations on itinerary - things to add/things to avoid
Restaurants in the area - please tell us anything you loved
Wineries - I was going to start researching to confirm they will be open since we're traveling close to harvest season. Let us know your favorite!

We appreciate any travel help!

If you have a couple of hours in L'Isle-sur-le-Sorgue, a highlight for us was to drive up to Fontaine de Vaucluse, and float in a tube down the river to ISLS, from where the company picks you up and takes you back to your car.

I will unashamedly share the link to an old trip report of mine. I really recommend Ansouis, close to Lourmarin.

Côtes du Rhône vineyards aren't very close to Lourmarin, overall. Do you have specific winegrowing areas that interest you? Otherwise, the countryside between Aix & the Luberon is full of vineyards that will be much easier to access. Chateau la Coste is one, but it is not your traditional vineyard experience - strong emphasis on art, modern Norman Foster-designed cellars, etc.

I would discourage a trip to Fontaine de Vaucluse itself, especially in early September with water at its lowest. The village is a bit tacky, and the spring is only impressive in wet periods nowadays, IMO. However, the suggested tubing activity would be great (and there is enough flow in the river at all times as far as I know).

I have two great recommendations.

For CNDP wine tour Olivier Hickman. I found him through Rick Steves book and we went with him twice in summer 2022. We were staying near Les Baux. The two groups were quite different one more newbies and younger people the other more sophisticated and older people but each tour was wonderful and tailored nicely to the groups interest. In one case we drove ourselves to CNDP in the other case he sent two taxis to our rental house for us. Both he then drove us in a rented van from CNDP on the tour. We were 6 people the one time and 8 people the other time. I think if you aren't more than 3 or 4 he can take you in his own car. He is fun, thoughtful, great company. We have been on other wine tours in other areas of the world and he is the best in our experience. His website is https://www.wine-uncovered.com/about-olivier-hickman/

For ebikes we booked a 1/2 day tour with Sun-E-Bikes in Bonnieux to do three of the hill towns there that same summer. Very good service. Our version included a wine tasting. And despite the hills the ebiking was not as hard as I thought. We had a great time. They have a few locations around Provence. https://www.sun-e-bike.com/en/day-trip/

Enjoy the planning!

My daughter and I enjoyed a truly scrumptious brunch at Pattisserie Jouvaud during our visit to L’Isle-sur-La Sorgue some years back.
It was so difficult to choose what to eat since everything looked so appetizing!
We also ended up buying some unique gifts/souvenirs.

We also enjoyed the various delicious flavors of ice cream at Gelateria Isabella.

Enjoy your time in beautiful France!

P.S. Please report back upon your return as I’d love to return to this amazing region of France.

Last June we had a very nice, inexpensive lunch at Pizza Eric in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Pizza is the feature, but our party had other things as well and everything was delicious. Small restaurant, but tasty food.
