Lowest temperatures in France

During this heatwave the two coolest places in France, except the high mountains, are the Alps and around Montpellier at only 35c or 95f. The rest of France is one of the warmest place on earth these coming days.

My son is spending the summer as a visiting scholar is Saarbrücken and he just told me the heat wave in France is a 1 in 1000 year event. Lucky for him, he has a fan!

Happy travels

We are unfortunately starting to have 1 in 1000 year events every year it appears...

Météo France shows Calais jumping from 31 to 36 in an hour. I’m surprised it’s so low because the map showed blood red for most of Normandy, all ofBrittany, in fact all is red or orange except a few departments around Montpellier and the Alps. It’s 42 in Bordeaux at 4 pm. Here’s the map.

Edit again: I just saw a photo of a thermometer taken on someone’s patio in Normandy at 4:30 pm that showed 50C.

Roasting here in Paris as we speak. I consider myself lucky that the rez-de-chaussée of my building is air conditioned because my apartment is an oven. 37°C/100°F right now.

Yesterday I met a friend for lunch on the Rue de Passy and any place that has AC didn't have a seat available.

It's also a horrible time because one of my fans not the dust and not one Darty or Leroy Merlin has a replacement.

Speaking of the weather, temperatures are around 42C (108F) right now all across the Southwest, and it’s almost 6 PM. My thermometer hit 45C (113F) this afternoon. The same thing is forecast for the next 3 days. My dog is getting hosed down 5 times a day (and I've been joining in too). I drove into townI to make a purchase., the streets were practically empty.

The garden is a total disaster, but luckily the tomatoes are holding up for now. :-)

Some storms blew over from England this morning and temporarily cooled down the North, Picardy and Champagne, as well as Paris to some extent until 1 or so, but the heat is now fully back on...

I was by IKEA in Bordeaux this afternoon and the temperature gauge said 49 (120f)! Gulp! It's so, so hot here. Though currently it's about 106 at my house. Forecast for tomorrow is 109...

Actually, the coastal cities along the Cote d'Azur, as is typical, were the same or cooler than most of the non-highland rest (although Menton was hotter, normally cooler). Although it is still hotter than normal. I think the far NW was also cooler, although other parts of the north as you noted are all 38-42. It was the same in May and in prior June heatwaves. .

The current Costco ad shows a Black & Decker fan on sale at 20E off. Pepsi and 7Up also on ad.

Calais a bit better ( less bad?) The overnight temps in the hi 60s to 70 really provides very little relief and not let things cool down.

Today's learning experience: "rez-de-chaussée" means 'ground floor'

Thanks for the geography wake-up. When I asked my husband where Calais was, he laughed “so someone thinks it’s in Normandy, oh no” response “me, I thought it was in Normandy.” I’ll probably receive a Michelin green guide to the North as a gift now.
Which would be good because a trip north is needed, preferably when it’s burning hot down south but cool and breezy up there.

Hang in there JoLui and Kim. This heat dome is predicted to move north and east in a few days. Thinking of all of you over there.

I really hope your husband will at least include a hotel voucher for a romantic (and refreshing) weekend in the area.
Enjoy!

Just make sure you book a hotel with A/C!

My son & DIL just returned from their trip where they attended a friend’s wedding in Giverny.
They said the weather was unbearable and to make things worse their hotel did not have A/C!

Wishing you all better weather soon!

I just heard a report on the BBC news that said the Eiffel Tower was closed during to the heat, and in the UK, train service was disrupted.

News report just mentioned there have been 40 drowning deaths in France in the past week. Apparently folks trying to cool off. Sadly not all heat related deaths happen on land.

France

The vast majority of drowning victims are (young) people who wanted to cool off by swimming in areas where it's usually prohibited because it's too dangerous, and they were swept away by the current.
