Just wanted to write a quick review of my recent stay in Eguisheim and the Alsace region. This was my second time in the area, thanks to Rick’s recommendation, and it was delightful. The town is great and off the beaten path enough so that it’s not overrun with tourists. I stayed at the home of Therese Bombenger, one of the chambres d’hotes that Rick recommends in his book, and it was fantastic. Located on a quiet street just outside the city center, it had a fantastic view of the mountains and castles to the west and the valley to the east, but it was only a few hundred yards from the town center, so very easy to get anywhere you wanted to go in town in a few minutes. The hosts were great and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable, breakfast was provided, and it was quite affordable. I would definitely recommend staying there.
Rick’s town walk was also wonderful. As always, he points out the small details that provide so much context that other guidebooks usually miss. The hike up to the castle was worth the effort (about 1 hour and 1000’ of elevation gain), and evening in the town was quiet and quaint with a beautiful sunset.
Also recommend renting bikes and wandering the roads through the vineyards. Picturesque and peaceful, memorable for a lifetime.
