That’s only €5 more, less than what is being requested at London museums like the National Gallery and the Tates, but it is more than a 29% sudden increase. Sacré bleu!
Wonder if this is a temporary increase to deal with/take advantage of Olympics visitors, or if it’s another case of Once the Price Goes Up, it Won’t Come Down?
I’m curious why you post this now, because the admission fee to enter the Louvre was already raised to €22 back in January of this year.
It was the first time in 7 years that the entrance price was raised. So I don’t feel it’s really fair to blame this on the Olympics. Given the inflation rate in the last 7 years this raise was long overdue.
Also please don’t forget that entrance to the Louvre is free for amongst others all those of 18 years and younger and for those between 18 and 25 who live in the EEA.
National Gallery is free
Simple Supply and Demand; the crowds are oppressive, why not charge more?
Maybe with the extra funds they can build a completely separate wing with it's own entrance to house the Mona Lisa, and a few select works, maybe call it the Mona Experience with moving walkways and 4D presentations, making the crowds in the main museum even more manageable.
I love Paul's idea.
How about a tie-in to the Olympics, like maybe a hurdle race for visitors to get to the Mona Lisa? Or perhaps a discus throw, but without using the arms - sort-of like the Venus de Milo? Actually, that could be a good Paralympics event.
Winners get to stand on a podium next to the Winged Victory. Heck, it’s a lot cheaper than actual Olympics tickets.
According to an article in Le Figaro last month, the Louvre's management is considering creating a separate room for the Mona Lisa with a separate entrance to save the other paintings from the "pollution of over tourism." So it looks like Paul's idea is in the works.
I don’t think we should think of public access to great works of art in terms of supply and demand.
The whole point of museums like the Louvre is that there’s an actual benefit to conserving art which extends beyond it being simply a plaything for the wealthy. I believe that the public at large should have the opportunity to engage with art and culture of all types.
