Louvre guide question

We will be in Paris mid May and I am getting ready to purchase my tickets for the Louvre. I am trying to decide between a individual ticket or a guided tour ticket. Anyone that has done the museum guided tour what did you think? Is it worth finding a local guide? Or can we just tour on our own?

I did a Paris Walks in the Marais. The guide was excellent and the price was good. I know they also do tours at the Louvre. I would say, my group was about 10-12. They take care of the ticket.

I've not done a guided tour from the Louvre itself but I have done 2 guided tours with other guides....both in association with Rick Steves tours in Paris. I will say that the Louvre is huge and because it is retrofitted in an old palace it's easy to get turned around and sometimes, even with the map and the app, difficult to get from "here to there". That would be the advantage to having a guide - especially if you want something like a "highlights" tour.

I've done a number of Paris Walks tours and I think one of the guided tours I had on my RS tour was contracted thru Paris Walks.

I think it also depends on how vested you are in art. If you have particular time periods that interest you, I'd go with a private guide who will tailor a tour to your wish list (maybe Rembrandt and Vermeer or maybe French decorative arts?). It also depends on your budget and what feels like a reasonable amount to spend.

Enjoy! This is one of my favorite museums...I usually go 2-3 times for each visit to Paris. There is SUCH a range of pieces on display here! Code of Hammurabi to the Vase Alienor d'Aquitaine gave to her first husband Louis VI to early Monets and other Impressionists.

The Louvre introductory tour in English is with a Louvre art historian. The Louvre's tours are excellent. I took many in French over the years when they used to have a robust education program.

Context tours specializes in art and has been praised on this website.

Local guides are contract workers, so you can see the same guides contracting with different agencies.
