Lorraine to Metz

I am trying to develop an itinerary for next September, CDG to Metz. Last year we arrived @ 8AM and sat for 5 hours waiting for our connection to Lyon.(to $$ to change pre-purchased tickets). I know our arrival processing time was unusually fast, but I would like to avoid such a long wait this time.
I am having difficulty determining bus times for this Metz connection. I can take a train straight out of CDG to Lorraine and bus to Metz. Last time we tried to make a train to bus connection it took us some time to find the bus, so I need clear connection times. I am getting conflicting information on schedule times for connection to Metz. Is there a website for bus schedules like trains? We will also plan on using the bus later so will need more information. Are there multiple bus companies operating, thus the conflicting info I am getting. I have used SNCF, Google, Rome2Rio and general search for bus number.

Our fall back is a train straight to Metz, CDG, Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est to Metz. That option would take longer, might miss connections and/ or longer wait.

Many thanks

The bus connecting the Lorraine TGV station to Metz is line 57.

You will find the bus timetables on the Keolis website

https://www.keolis3frontieres.com/

In the middle frame (HORAIRES) select: line 57 (Louvigny-Metz)

The bus schedule currently available are only until December 14.

I'm confused. There are trains that run direct between Paris and Metz. Why would you go to Lorraine if you want to get to Metz? The TGV goes every 3 hours. Just go from CDG to the Gare d le Est station via the RER B train that runs every 10 minutes. Or take a cab. Either way it's a lot faster than going via Lorraine.

That being said, I wouldn't bother planning this for another 7 months as there's a good chance the schedules will change.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. There are multiple trains to Metz with very different travel times. I would want to connect with the 10:40 which may be tight arriving at CDG@ 8:00 AM. The next train would be 1:38. Lots of waiting time. Arrival time would be 3:00.

I could easily meet the 11:22 train to Lorraine from CDG and a short 30 min bus ride to Metz, departs every 30 mins. Our arrival in Metz would be 2:30 PM ish. Making a earlier bus (10 minutes to make connection) we could be there by 1:15.

Having written it out I can see not much difference. But, taking a train from CDG sounds more relaxing that REF, to North, to East and on. I make an effort to avoid connections and keep things simple as possible, sadly age is becoming an issue!

I guess my advice to myself is no prior purchase and see how long it takes to get thru entry. I understand these time will change by September. Again, thank you.

Well, you could always take a train to Reims, and from there to Metz. Or fly to Luxembourg (since you're at the airport) and train from there. Multiple flights daily.

Me, I'd rent a car and drop it in Metz. 3-3.5 hours easy drive. Pretty country. You could leave pretty quick, no need to hang around. Maybe even make a side detour along the way. Costs about 30 euro. (Actually a bit more as there's the toll to be paid.)

Ellen, I'm doing this same journey in December and will let you know how it works out. I too was looking for a connection from CDG.

Thank you JoLui for the website for the timetable.

My flight is scheduled to land around 8 and I have reserved the 11:20 TGV, (changeable ticket). Total travel time from CDG to Metz, including the bus is scheduled at 1 hour 50 minutes. Way less than the time to taxi to Gare del'Est and then wait for the TGV direct to Metz.

I'll take the TGV direct from Metz back to Paris

Jules,

Thanks, will be interested to hear your experience. Quick question. I do not see where on can purchase a changeable ticket. Though I do not purchase I only see an option for first or second class.

Hello,
Here are the terms of the ticket that I purchased.

TARIF STANDARD PREMIÈRE
Ticket may be exchanged (with adjustment to the current fare) or refunded free of charge up to D-7. From D-6 and up to departure: €19 charge on TGV and 40% of the price (max €15) on Intercités. From 30 minutes before departure, ticket may be exchanged once and not refunded thereafter.

Jules,
Last year we got thru arrival procedure in less than an hour. I could have changed my 2 tickets to an earlier train but the additional cost was well over $200, can't remember the exact amount but remember being very surprised. . As I read your ticket it is the same ,"exchanged with adjustment to current fare". We decided to have coffee and wait! Looking at the prices now for same day train fare I can't find anything that would be that expensive. I bought the tickets in May for $72 each. This was CDG to Lyon. Wishing you well and that you make the train, which 11:22 you will!

That's the problem with most (maybe all) changeable tickets--you have to pay the difference between the price of the bargain ticket you purchased way in advance and the price of the new ticket you want, which is likely to be at full fare. On trips of any significant length, that can be a lot of money.
