Looking for Suggestions on area to visit

I am a first timer here on the forum. I have a question regarding where to go this August. So far my husband, two teenage daughters (ages 13 and 15) and I are staying in Paris for 4-5 nights then heading to a friend's country home in Normandy. We will be there for probably 3 nights. We want to do a couple of days in the Loire Valley and either between Normandy and Loire I was thinking of heading to Brittany OR maybe doing more of a loop around Paris, so Normandy, Loire and then Dijon area?? We will be traveling by car. I'm looking for another two or three nights.

I prefer smaller villages, like chateaux and cathedrals and museums, and food/wine interest.

Thanks for any input you have.

We spent a couple of weeks last July in Brittany and look forward to returning for more. Different from much of France, it's mostly small villages. Even the cities, like Brest and Quimper, aren't huge metropolises. Most roads aren't vast superhighways, either, so getting around by car takes some time. We rented and returned our rental car in Brest after flying there, but headed out of the city almost immediately for towns like Pont Aven and Josselin (with an overnight sea kayak trip to an island in between). The Cote Granit Rose, with pink stone along the coast, eroded into fantastic shapes, was fascinating. The area is also home to prehistoric standing stones and burial chambers, quite extraordinary! Make sure to try some kouign-amann ("queen amahn"), a rich sort-of cross between a croissant and a caramel roll, a Breton specialty! Rick Steves' guidebook doesn't cover any of Brittany to the west of St. Malo, so we used the Lonely Planet France and the Rough Guide France books as references. If you make the trip to Brittany, you'll find memorable sights and experiences.

The most logistically efficient choice would be Brittany, so if you are genuinely undecided, go with that. From Normandy to Burgundy is a long trip.

However, the coast will be crowded in August, so if Brittany is your choice you may wish to make reservations now, if you can. And I think logistics should be a tiebreaker, not necessarily the decision maker, so the real question is which of these very different regions calls to you and yours.

If you are flying home from CDG, my choice would be the Loire as you would be in a better position to return to Paris for your flight home. You can easily spend 3 days there. Amboise or one of the nearby smaller towns works well as a base. I'm assuming you will have a car.

With only 3 nights, and interest in villages, I would set up a second base in Normandy. Normandy is a big place. Also, don't miss Chartres on the way back to Paris. Spending more time in Normany will give you more time to see and do things, less time in transit.
