Hello all,
I have a 2 part Question.
We will be stopping in Toulouse for 2 nights in June to help get my daughter set up for summer classes and looking for a nice place in or near the city center. We would love to hear any recommendations.
In mid July we will be back in Toulouse and considering using this as our "home" base for a few days before moving on to Provence. We were considering day trips to Albi, Carcassonne and possibly Perpignan. Any suggestions on other towns in that area that are "must see"?
Thanks,
Bill and Kate
Friends were in Toulouse for six months and used sejouratoulouse.com. We have a rental with them in a few months. Another place to visit is Cord-sur-Ciel.
A two part answer...
We too are going to be in Toulouse for a few days in August to attend a wedding. We've been looking at the centrally located Privilege Appart-Hotels. We haven't booked yet but we like the idea of a kitchenette, extra living space, pool, air conditioning, being close to the city center, reasonable price and good transportation links. I'll be watching for other people's suggestions because we will be booking soon.
@ Bets, I can't get your suggested link to work. Do you have any advice for us?
Several years ago we were based for a month in a lovely home in Albi. I highly recommend Albi for one of your day trips, wineries around Gaillac, Lisle-sur-Tarn, Cordes-sur-Ciel, Carcassonne, Canal du Midi etc. Read up about the Cathars before you go--very interesting history for some of the hill towns. We also enjoyed spotting the many elaborate medieval pigeonniers (pigeon houses) as we drove around the countryside.
Typo: sejour, not sehour. I'll correct it in the original.
I studied in Toulouse a few years ago. Your daughter will love it. The city is really walkable and navigable by metro so you really can't go wrong. When my mom visited, she stayed at the Mercure Centre Compans because it was right by the school and my apartment. The hotels/apartments near Capitole, Jean-Jaures, Jeanne D'Arc, or Compans Caffarelli are pretty centrally located and convenient.
We did day trips to Albi and Carcassone and both were great. We also did an overnight trip to Andorra just so we could say we went. It was snowy and beautiful, but I'm not sure if it would be worth it in the summer. Either way, it's still fun to say you've been. There's a bus service that takes you for a very reasonable amount.
We enjoyed our stay at St. Claire Hotel in Toulouse--very near the city center and public transportation connections. The Bistrot Restaurant nearby was a great option for dinner. If you like museums/art, the Fondation Bemberg is worth a visit in Toulouse.
