London to Paris via Normandy

We are planning to travel by rail from London to Paris, and are wondering if there is a way to make a stop to visit Normandy sites on the way?

Hi,
There is a way, but it's a bit more complicated, so I'm not sure it'll suit you. To be more specific.
- Fastest way from London to Normandy is actually via Paris with Eurostar. The Eurostar high speed rail link from London to Paris does not pass by Normandy.
- But you can take a train to London to Portsmouth followed by ferry from Portsmouth to Caen. The ferry is overnight. It's not daily, it's a short night, but it can be time efficient: you leave London in the evening of Day 1, and arrive in Normandy in the early morning of day 2.
(there is also a fast ferry from Portsmouth to Cherbourg, but that's daytime and mornings only, so not optimal time-wise).

To get from London to Normandy you have two options:
1) Train via Paris.
2) Ferry from Portsmouth to Caen or Cherbourg. These ferries are designed for cars, using them as foot passengers requires taxis or buses to and from stations.

Other travellers have discovered unless you are travelling by car (or planning an invasion) the easiest way to Normandy is via Paris.

If you really want to take a cross-channel ferry, be aware that the ferries don't run every day out of all the ports. Instead, they serve certain ports on certain days. There are also various periods when service is cut back because boats are pulled out of rotation for maintenance.

Then, too, there can be a cancellation either due to weather or labor issues. This happened to us and we had to race (in our rental car) to a different port to catch the only available crossing that day. If we'd been traveling by train we would have been stuck until the next day, or possibly longer.
