Loire Valley Mystery Tour

A week from today we will arrive at CDG with the Loire region our ultimate destination. The French part of our trip will be a change for me. I normally carefully plan (overly plan according to my wife). This time, my plans are completely open.

We will be meeting up with our grandson and his "jeune fille" friend. He is finishing up a year at university in Paris. We are leaving our visit's plans to them. She lives in Loches, where we have rented an apartment for our stay. I have a very loose list of things I'd like to see - the Wednesday market in Loches, Le Château du Clos Lucé and the Chenonceau Château. We'll be in the region Tuesday afternoon - Sunday morning, returning to Paris to Eurostar to London for the second part of the trip.

It will be wonderful to have a local citizen show us around. I wish we could stay a month!

You will love Chateau du Clos Luce, the home King Francis I of France built for Leonardo da Vinci. The inside of the lovely people-sized mansion and the grounds are peppered with models of Leonardo's inventions. Perfectly charming. We had a lovely sunny day when we visited.

Chateau Chenonceau is also delightful to visit. It's called the ladies palace for its beautiful floral displays throughout and the furniture - I felt I could move right in. The gardens are wonderful, too. This time of year should be perfect.

I know you will have a wonderful time with your grandson. I remember your posts from last year before he went to Paris.

Make sure she takes you through Chedigny, the roses will just about be at their best, but avoid the weekend because it will be very busy. Loches itself I would spend more time in rather than Clos Lucé. If you get a chance to visit the bar " la Caravage" near the Porte de Cordeliers do so and have one of their enormous cocktails.

Thanks Judy and Simon! I just looked up Chedigny and it is charming! We are also going to visit the University of Tours. Will is looking at returning to continue his studies there. He wants to either teach French in the US or English in France. We have a college professor friend who is head of the French department at a local university and she did most of her college work in France. I think it would be a wonderful career for Will and we are supporting him in his quest.
