Considering a last minute trip to Amboise in Loire valley area from Paris in about 2 weeks.
I see the connections on the Trainline app are about 2 hrs from gare de Nord.
BUT you need a car to visit most of chateaus in area.
Does anyone know about proximity of rental car companies near train station or any issues I should be aware of in getting a rental car for 3-4 days. I assume better to get a car there than somewhere in Paris and driving down. Thanks for your help.
The best place to rent a car in the area is St Pierre des Corps train station, accessed from Paris Montparnasse. Very quick drive to Amboise from there!
Thanks so much. So you take the high speed SNCF train to Tours from montparnesse (where we were leaving our Viking tour at the Pullman hotel) get the rental at a larger station and easily drive over……..wow…….thanks!
The area seems to be highly recommended by Rick in his videos…….
TGV from Montparnasse to Saint Pierre des Corps, hire car there. Ignore the car's GPS, because there are road closures between Tours and Amboise. You won't hire a car in Amboise, it's really just a glorified very small town.
Amboise is an RS favorite. Can't see it myself, but different strokes for different folks, although at the end of September you should avoid the worst of the crush.
Also, I assume that a rental car is essential to visit this area. Some air b&b’s claim to be close to transit and there are tour minibuses………but maybe just best to rent a car……….
Thanks
Actually, if you stay in Tours rather than Amboise, you can easily visit many chateaux by public transportation. But staying in a smaller town like Amboise, I would indeed want a car.
I would not do this area by public transportation. It is spread out. It may feel virtuous, but it's impractical for doing three to six chateaux per day. You'll also have more hotel choice. Beware of summer heat. Note that most car agencies close from 12-2.
Two chateaux a day is enough, even by car. If you tried to do six châteaux a day all you would see is the car park as you drive past.
Summer heat shouldn't be a problem in autumn, even if it is warm today
Autumn is probably my favorite time of year to visit the Loire. Our last visit was around the end of September and the weather was beautiful. Warm but not hot during the day, and cool enough to want a sweater in the evenings. We rented our car at the St Pierre des Corps station and stayed just outside Amboise. Most days we only visited 2 chateaux. Some days we saw 3 that were relatively close together. I much preferred having a car so we could tour at our own pace, lingering if we found something of particular interest, such as the garden festival at Chateau Charmont.
Pay attention to the open hours of the car rental agencies. They close for lunch and Sundays.
Guess we get a car reserved. Then I guess getting an accommodations in Amboise beats in Tours…..assume it has some ambiance and walks on the Loire?
Yes, with a car you are better off in Amboise. Or consider Chaumont (smaller, less touristy).
