Lodging suggestion for Aix-en-Provence & L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue

Hi,

I'm thinking to spend one night in Aix-en-Provence when visiting Provence. Can you suggest a hotel or a B&B?

Also, is it better to stay in the city or outside of Aix? overnight parking in the city is probably going to be difficult and expensive, correct?

Can you also suggest a place for L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue for one night stay as well? Do you suggest to stay at the same place for 2 nights instead?

Thanks!

You probably would be disappointed with the outer limits of Aix. Central Aix is a bear for getting in and out of, but it's neat. Park on the back streets and it's free at night. Garages are probably the semi-standard twenty euro.

Look at the Hotel Cardinale on Rue Cardinal. One has an E and one doesn't but I forget which is which. It's in the old quarter.

Where you stay each night depends on what you want to see and how long since you've been in a city. The two are only about an hour apart.

Thanks Ed.

Here is the places we are planning to visit after leaving Nice.

Day1: Nice -> Lac de Sainte-Crox -> Puimoisson -> Valensole (should we stay in Aix or L'Isle sur la Sorgue)
Day2: Hotel/B&B -> Arles -> Nimes -> St. Remeny (Aix or L'Isle sur la Sorgue for the night?)
Day3: Hotel/B&B -> Fontain de Vanculuse -> Gordes -> Abbaye de enangue -> Sault -> Roussillon. On this night, we will drive to Avignon and stay there for the night.

Or do you have any other suggestion on how we should allocate the places to visit during the three days?

I would not stay in 3 places over 3 nights. Pick out a central place and stay there all 3 nights. Maybe St. Remy?

I totally agree with Andrea. Why would you want to pack up and change hotels every day when you can stay 3 nights in a central place and see all of the places you want to see?

Hi,

I'm planning 3 nights at Nice and final 2 nights at Avignon. I'm just not sure where should I base for the middle two nights since I'll be driving to visit the place between Nice and Avignon. I thought about staying at Aix for the middle 2 nights, but heard L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is a very nice place to stay too....so I thought maybe allocate one night at each place base on the place I'll be visiting that day and the next day....

According to Via Michelin, Avignon and L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue are less than 40 minutes drive apart. Why not just spend those extra nights in Avignon, rather than spending time at another place? Or spend all your Provence nights in one central place?

Hi Andrea,

Because we are visiting in July, most of the places I contacted in Avignon don't have any rooms available anymore. I was only able to book 2 nights at the Avignon B&B. I want my last stop to be Avignon because I'll be returning the rental car at Avignon TGV and taking the early train the next morning, so I want to be close by....

I have seen all the places you listed and always stay in St. Remy as it is beautiful (my favorite town in provence) but it is also easy to drive in and out of for your day trips. Avignon was much bigger than I anticipated, as was Aix. I prefer a small village feel versus a city.... but that is just me. I really like the feeling of the smaller towns as my home base.

I'd do what Tk says.

I've always liked Aix, but it can be a mess getting in and out with the darn one-way ring road with a thousand names. Heading north is the worst.

Avignon has never rung my bell. After the bridge stub and the palace, it's mostly one more city.

Coming in from Saint Remy is only a thirty-minute drive and the TGV station is right there on the south side of town. You could burn that much time just crossing town if you're not right next door.
