We are planning a car trip to this region in Sep/Oct 2017. Arriving from Germany for 8-10 days (have some flexibility). We have traveled extensively in Germany and Austria and found it easy to find lodging through their TI Offices or on our own. No experience in France. Would appreciate your experiences.

Not sure how easy/difficult it will be compared to your success in Germany & Austria, but in Normandy I can recommend the Hotel Logis du Casino in Vierville-sur-Mer. It is listed in the RS guide (France, 2014 edition) and we found it to be excellent; would happily stay there again. Its breakfast/dining area is glassed in with a panoramic view of the beach, including D-Day monument and some remnants of battle hardware. It is about 15-20 minutes' drive west of the American Cemetery.
