We are driving from a small town north of Milan to Normandy area where we stay at least a week. We want to stop enroute at Macon for several nights, then a small town in Loire area for two nights. Prefer an apartment or at least with a refrigerator, or B&B. Any suggestions please and ASAP! Thanks.
We stayed in a Macon hotel for several nights and didn't care for the city at all. Two towns nearby that we did like were Cluny and Autun. We were staying at Macon in order to participate in services at Taize and see these smaller nearby town's monasteries and cathedrals. The whole region is peppered with Gites. http://en.gites-de-france.com A search of Macon (expanded to include 30k around the city) produced ~200 Gites. They have a rating system and filter so you can fine tune your search. Two other city options further north and south of Macon, respectively are Beaune and Lyon. If you are trying to stay near Macon but then drive west to the Loire, perhaps Cluny would be positioned better for you than the cities I've mentioned. We've not personally booked a Gite but friends of ours have and had some memorable experiences.
