Lodging for university student attending Cannes Film Festival

My 21yr old film major son has been granted a pass to the Cannes Film Festival this May (2023). This is his dream come true. He’s worked very hard to earn this spot and save money for the trip.

His current obstacle is finding economical lodging within about a 30min radius of the festival. Obviously, demand is high and many places (including hostels) are booked up. He’s also been told to be wary of lodging scams during this highly attended event.

I’m turning to this incredible community of travelers to find out whether anyone has any ideas or recommendations I can pass along to him?

Thank you in advance!

hey hey jcpowers
it is late to be looking for next month. what are his dates and what is his budget in euros and how far out will he go? i'm sure he'll need to be on a transportation/train line. what does the pass get him and from whom he got the pass? they don't have any information for him?

Hi princess pupule-

The festival offers a limited number of accreditations to 18-28yr olds who are passionate about film. He submitted an application along with an essay, etc and just received confirmation that his application was accepted. Needless to say, he is over the moon.

Yes, it’s very late to be searching for lodging and it’s an expensive area in which to stay, regardless of how much time ahead one makes arrangements. The festival did not offer suggestions.

He will need to stay somewhere nearby that offers relatively convenient public transportation (direct line to Cannes would be ideal). So far, he has been searching in Antibes but will consider all reasonable options.

Have you spent time here? We’d be so grateful for useful ideas from folks who may have experience in the surrounding area.

Try Nice. It's farther away, but it's right on the train line. There are some moderately priced hotels near the main Nice train station (Nice Ville). Some of the blocks in that area look a bit scruffy, but I (then-66-year-old female) wasn't uncomfortable in the area; I stayed on the south side of the station (the front). He can try booking.com to identify places that seem to be affordable and have vacancies, then contact them directly to see if he can get a better rate than he sees on booking.com.

The train from Nice to Cannes takes 33-41 minutes and the regional trains cost about 8 euros each way. The trip from Antibes is only 3.30 euros, so he'd need to weigh the additional transportation cost against the (presumed) lower lodging rate.

A potential issue is that it looks as if the last train departs Cannes at 10:03 PM (on weekdays), and it's a TGV that probably costs quite a bit more than 8 euros without being significantly faster. (I got this info from the Deutsche Bahn website because SNCF wouldn't cooperate.) The last regional train departs Cannes at 9:39 PM. That seems too early for night showings at the festival, but that would be an issue even staying as close as Antibes.

Edited to add: I see some dorm beds available in Nice--even for the entire period of the festival. (What are his arrival and departure dates?) With the longer-than-30-minute train ride from Cannes, I think he'd want to be careful about the location to be sure he doesn't have a long walk or bus ride between the train station and the lodging place.

The Hotel Ozz very near the train station has one bed in a dorm available right now on booking.com. He could make a reservation with free-cancellation privileges and keep looking.

Nice has a second train station, Nice-St-Augustine, that's a bit closer to Cannes. There might be lodging options in that area, but I'm not at all familiar with it, and I don't know that all the regional trains stop there. That late TGV I mentioned above almost certainly does not.

We were in Nice during the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Gran Prix. Nice was mobbed, couldn’t get into restaurants. Luckily we had reserved an apartment. I think he will have to go farther out, inland to find a place to stay. Or, what about staying in a university dorm? Wishing him luck for what will be an amazing experience. Whomever is offering students these tickets must be able to help them find rooms somewhere.

There are a lot of places in Nice with rooms available during this year's festival. Whether any of them are suitable financially for a college student is the question. Going farther out would substantially increase the time spent in transit every day, because train+bus would probably be needed. As it is, I'm concerned about the lack of really late-night trains for getting back from Cannes at the end of the day.

Hi All - thanks so much for your input and helpful tips. My son just messaged to say he was able to secure a bed at the Bananas Camp hostel in Cannes. Phew!

that's a good result. Don't know the place but the distance to work is fabulous!!!

Because it is usually around the same time as the Monaco Grand Prix I was quite worried about him heading Nice way.
