Lodging Favorites in Cassis or Surrounding?

We will be in S. France in May. Flying into Marseilles, and renting a car. We have our lodging in Aix and Uzes squared away, but looking for something memorable around Cassis. Anyone have a favorite?

My personal, memorable favorite, but not luxurious, is the youth hostel La Fontasse - bunk beds, no showers (water source is rain water), kitchen for your use, best to arrive by car and bring food, some breakfast available, great location for hikers, right in the middle of the park. I have not tried any competing accommodations. Another link: http://www.hifrance.org/auberge-de-jeunesse/cassis.html.

The hotels recommended in Rick's Provence & Riviera book all have various trade-offs described, so you have to decide which factors are more important to you.

We loved L'avila Cassis this past July. We had a beautiful and very comfortable room overlooking the sea and Francesca's breakfasts were quite a treat every day. Francesca took wonderful care of us and we'd stay there again in a minute.

It sounds like you already have a lodging recommendation, and I can't remember the name of the place we stayed at, but I do have one suggestion: for dinner, avoid the places on the port, and go into the center. The first night in Cassis we ate at a place right on the water, and it was incredibly disappointing. A total tourist trap, complete with an American tourist group. And other places along the water looked just like it. The next night we walked a block or 2 in from the port, found a place that looked interesting, and had a wonderful meal. All the other diners looked like locals.

Martin,

I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay there. While our room was wonderful and breakfasts were delicious, it was Francesca who made our stay so special. She'll take good care of you! If you get a chance, take some time to chat with her two young sons - they're just delightful. Nancy
