Location after France - Germany or Spain?

My husband and I are in Europe from mid August to end of September. We are flying into London, staying 4 nights then getting a train to Paris (stay 4 nights). After that we have two options:

  1. Train to Sans Sebastian (via Irun) and stay 3 nights, then drive to Barcelona (stay 4 nights), then fly up to Munich (3 nights), visit Salzburg (2-3 nights) and train to Berlin (4 nights).

  2. Train to Munich, visit Salzburg and Berlin then fly to Barcelona/Sans Sebastian.

After either of these options, we need to get to Florence, Italy for the next part of our trip. I'm assuming a flight would be easiest.

I guess what I am wanting advice on is which would be the best option and does anyone have recommendations on the best way to do this section of our trip. Its kind of frustrating me!

If I were doing this, I would do option 1, but fly to Berlin from Barcelona, then work my way south by train. There is a main train line connecting Munich with Florence. You could break up the trip with a stop in Bolzano ( gateway to the Dolomites) or maybe Verona on the way. Also between Berlin and Munich I would break up the train ride with an overnight somewhere. We chose Bamberg, a lovely small town famous for its "smoked beer" but well worth a visit to see the traditional architecture and old castle. Very friendly town.

Train from Paris to Munich takes 6 hours and one departure is direct. Train to Irun takes the same timing, but fewer departure options, followed by an additional connection to San Sebastian. That train connection to SS is about equal to the transfer you would otherwise make between SS and it's airport at Hondarribia. So that's a wash.

Next issue is if the flight times and prices are also a wash. Flying from Barcelona to Pisa is commonly a cheap route; see also www.skyscanner.com.
