Hello,
We'll be visiting Paris in May, and would love to check out bars that have either live jazz or contemporary French music. We're open to any neighborhoods, as well as any bars that welcome a broad age range. (We're not twenty-somethings, but we're not dead yet, either.)
Thanks so much for your suggestions!
I've heard good things about Sunset Sunside Jazz, though we did not get there last trip. There's also the Caveau de la Huchette, which could be fun, though it's it a very touristy area.
There are many small venues dedicated to Gypsy Jazz and the like, searching threads on TA may be helpful. Also the weekly mag (Pariscope?) when you get there.
There is often music in the parks, but that may be more of a summer thing, you may be early for it.
Good luck!
As well as the magazine Pariscope, mentioned by Dave above, pick up a copy of Time Out Paris, or go to their website.
My husband is a clarinetist. He really enjoyed the gypsy jazz group at Le Bouquet du Nord.
Excellent, le Bouquet du Nord... I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for some gypsy jazz. We've actually seen a couple of GJ bands here in New York State, and they're a blast.
Thank you all for your help!
You might also google Olivier Franc and try to find where he'll be playing. We came across him playing on the street in front of the Orsay Museum, then went to a concert he was giving with others. He's on YouTube, Facebook and evidently has a blog.
Although I have not been there (yet), it's on my list for my next trip to Paris, is La Chope des Puces in Saint-Ouen. From what I've read about it, it is a "temple" to Django Reinhardt and Jazz Manouche. While the area is not the best, I am really anxious to check it out... In fact, next Friday they are celebrating the birthday of Django Reinhardt.
