Does anyone know of a good place to purchases Limoges boxes in Paris?
There are several possibilities - several shops on the Rue Royale just south of La Madeleine , including Haviland and Bernadaud - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Boutique+Bernardaud/@48.8673191,2.3214025,16z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x47e66fcd4a54ebd5:0xbf658595cb69aa8d!8m2!3d48.8679664!4d2.3221096 And this maker - Laure Selignac - https://laureselignac.fr/en/4-porcelain-collectibles-and-boxes
While I can not remember the name of the shop where I bought my first Limoges boxes, it was in a tourist shop near the Boulevard Saint Michel before crossing the street to the Seine. I had come down the Boulevard, turned right and it was in one of the little shops. I will tell you about my experience.
When I bought them, I did not realize what a "Limoges" box was. I had picked out three little boxes with hinges on them. They each had a gilded gold band around them with cute little closures. At least two of the boxes had small items in them that related to the lids. Since the boxes were in a locked glass case, I should have realized the value. However, as I was getting out my credit card, the shop keeper told me that the price would be about 600 euros. I almost fainted! I know that I could have stopped the purchase but I swallowed hard and bought the boxes. I think I will have to leave them to my sister in my will because not many other people will appreciate their significance or value.
Now, since you probably already know the value of a Limoges box because otherwise, you would not be asking where to purchase them. Perhaps you already own some Limoges. However, you may wish to ask about the price before you make the purchase. :)
Good luck!
Bev , I hope you don't regret the purchase . If you had left the shop without buying them , I think you would have ultimately come to regret your decision , and at 200 EU per box , it sounds like the price was fair . Have a look at this short article about the boxes - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limoges_Box . Also , since you appreciate fine porcelain take a look here - not Limoges , but Viennese ( Augarten ) and worth a drool ! https://www.augarten.com/en/product/rectangle-box-deco-vienne/
This reminds me of the time, several years ago, when I was in a very nice antique shop on King Street in Charleston, SC. A woman customer picked up a Limoges box and took it to the shopkeeper and asked the price of "...this Lime-Oh-Jees box".
Hi Bev,
I own 4 Limoges boxes, purchased over the years during various trips to Paris. They all have sentimental value. 2 were gifts from my late husband. I know they are pretty pricey, but if I see one that touches my heart, I might spring for it. Thanks. Kate
Steven, I think I would have regretted not purchasing the Limoges boxes if I had not done so. I probably would have also regretted it if my husband had known the cost of the boxes. Since the credit card is in my name, I am the only one who received the bill.
Now, it would be really great IF I could find the real Limoges boxes instead of the cheap ones that I have also purchased. I think that would entail a massive cleaning job!
Kateja, I checked Steven's suggested website. There are some beautiful boxes with lilies of the valley on them. Since it was yesterday (May 1) when I was looking, I really wish I could have purchased one or two. Good luck with your purchases!
Rue de Paradis in the 10th is the traditional porcelain and crystal shopping street. It's not geared to tourists particularly, but shoppers with means from around the world go there for the quality items.
And don't forget the detax!
