Limited Services Available in Nice on May 1

For the benefit of those who might plan a late-April/early May trip to southern France in the future (and have good memories): I knew May 1 was a holiday in France and that the tourist office might not be open when I flew into Nice that day (which was indeed the case), but it never occurred to me that there would be no public transportation from the airport into the city. Neither train nor bus service was available, and there were only three cabs in the queue. I managed to connect with another traveler headed into town, so were able to split the estimated 35-40 euro taxi fare. The cab driver was a gem; when he realized his two passengers were not going to the same hotel, he volunteered to drop me off quite near my lodgings on the way to the ultimate destination, at no extra charge. I ended up with a 3- or 4-block walk rather than the 1.25 miles I was expecting. Which turned out to be fortuitous, because when I unpacked my suitcase, I realized that the airline had destroyed one of the wheels. First time that has happened to me; yes, it's a spinner--my first. Or rather, it was a spinner.

On the positive side, there aren't many tourists here yet, and the weather, though not 100% sunny, has been warm enough for me but cool enough for haters of summer weather.

Oh acraven, bummer about your suitcase!! And I too am surprised that the 1st meant such a dramatic difference for service into town. Am glad you found a fellow traveler to defray the cost, and a friendly taxi driver. Hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!

"it never occurred to me that there would be no public transportation from the airport into the city."

It would never have occurred to me either, so I'm glad it worked out for you (except for the suitcase - I hope it wasn't too expensive).

On our first trip to Europe together 35 years ago we arrived in Venice on May 1 not realizing that it was the biggest holiday in most of Europe; the boats were not running and we had to walk over a mile to our hotel from the train station hauling giant suitcases (first big trip and no wheelie suitcases -- big canvas Landsend bags) . I remember hauling those things up and down over bridges to our hotel near La Fenice. We felt like doofuses for being so unaware of a major local holiday.

Well, I bought a screwdriver and rotated the wheels on my suitcase, so there are two good wheels on the rear corners. As someone who prefers 2-wheeled bags, I've mostly pulled it in two-wheel mode, anyway. As I mentioned in a post after last year's trip, the bag was no longer gliding smoothly even on airport concourses after being bounced around Spanish sidewalks for 3 months. I suspect spinners are best for folks who mostly take taxis to their hotels.

Time will tell whether the repaired bag makes it through the rest of this year's trip. I have no flight until I return home, but I guess I'd better hold onto the screwdriver. (Just what I need--more weight in the bag!)
