Lille Side Trip Suggestions

My family will be in Lille for eight days in June while attending some Euro Cup games; four games in Lille and two in Lens. While in Lille, we are planning on visiting Arras and some of the WWI Memorials as well as Ghent while setting some time aside to really feel a part of Lille. After leaving Lille, we will be in Belgium for five days; two in Bruges and three in Brussels before flying out. We plan to visit Antwerp while in Brussels. So...long story a bit longer, For two and a half days we have a break in between games are are looking to get out of Lille. We planned on going to London before the price of the train scared me away.,,

We are now considering Rotterdam (we were in Amsterdam two years ago) and Cologne. Both seems to be about a solid three hours from Lille by train. My question to the community, which would be the better venue to visit for two days? Also open to other suggestions so long as they are about three hours by train. Thanks in advance. Regards.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are flying into and out of Paris...so we will be there two days and as a family, we were there six days two years ago. It is a great city, but we would love to go some place else.

It comes down to a matter of opinion. Do check the train routing and connection times carefully-Antwerp can be 3 hours from Lille.

My vote is for Cologne, which is a much nicer city than Lille. Note that Cologne Is NOT directly on the scenic Middle Rhine. You have to take the train to Bingen and boat up to Boppard or so.

I think you are selling Antwerp short. I've spent weeks there, and would rather stay there than Lille, which is nice enough. You can stay in Antwerp and make day trips to many of the places you are planning to sleep in.

I agree with woinParis--go to Aachen. The cathedral there is one of the oldest in Europe with the added benefit of having a variety of different architectural styles in one building. We took a one-hour guided tour put on by the cathedral which was quite informative. There is a museum nearby that is also interesting. All in all, a worthwhile visit.
