Is the light show worth an overnight stay in Chartres? It's late and not conducive to a train back to Paris when it's done. The Trip Advisor reviews are very good. Anyone out there have an opinion?

Well I can't comment on the light show at Chartres, but we were in Strasbourg this Summer and the cathedral there, which is absolutely stunning is celebrating it's 1000 year anniversary. It is a very quick non stop two hour train trip from Paris and the light show was incredible. In addition, the city itself is an absolute jewel, friendly, good food, and beautiful buildings. Would highly recommend a night.

ok, a semi-contrary opinion. The light show is amazing, but it lasts maybe 10-15 minutes (they repeat it many times, its worth watching more than once). I wouldn't dedicate a whole day to Chartres if that was the only reason for going. Now if you want to tour the cathedral (and if so definitely go when Malcolm Miller is giving a tour) and also visit the town, then the show is a nice bonus and since I was going to be there anyway for those other things then I'd stay the nite for the show. BTW most shops in town are closed on Sunday/Monday, so don't go on those days.

Yes, be sure to go to Chartres and see the light show... If you don't want to spend a lot of time there, just go in the late afternoon and check into a hotel. We stayed at the recommended Hotellerie Saint Yves for one night, and enjoyed staying there. Also do the RS recommended walking tour, it is a very pretty place to walk, stop at a cafe for drinks and or dinner. The light show is definitely worth seeing, I have seen nothing like it before & very hard to describe to people!! Then take the train back to Paris in the morning..... Chartres is a good place to re-charge after a few days in the hustle and bustle of Paris! Enjoy your trip!!

When we were in Chartres in 2013 we walked through town and along the river in the evening and there were light shows on multiple buildings including the cathedral and along the water. It took us several hours and it was lovely. I've never seen anything quite like it - definitely worth an evening. It was one of the highlights of our stay there.
