Am doing preliminary research for a driving trip around Normandy and Brittany next year and came across a couple of older threads both here and on TripAdvisor regarding the Liber-T pass, which looks like it may be a worthwhile purchase just for the convenience involved while motoring along the toll roads in the region ... of which there seem to be a surprising number.
The most recent discussion I could find is over 6 years old so I'd like to request an update from recent users and those who have experience with the device. Specifically, is it worth purchasing one before the trip to speed things up a bit at the toll booths or it it likely to be overkill for what we propose to do, which is essentially meandering around along the (mostly) back roads of Normandy & Brittany.
Also, we'll be renting thru AutoEurope (Hertz in this case) at the Caen Gare location. Does anyone know whether the device is offered as optional equipment upon arrival to the rental car desk? I see no mention of it on the AutoEurope site... or on the Hertz website either.
Would appreciate any updated information ad/or opinions. Thanks in advance.
Normandy has few toll roads (none west of Caen), and Brittany has none, so you definitely do not need a toll transponder.
Robert,
I may have this wrong, but it is my belief that Brittany has no toll roads, due to an exemption from the past. Not sure of the details, but I would check to see if you would need it much there. Also, we have seldom used toll roads in either Brittany or Normandy, as the D roads are so much more pleasant and scenic to use. If this pass still exists, I would check to see if it is worth the cost. Perhaps you are referring to a transponder? That is another issue altogether. Many cars do have them and some commuters use them, but I don't know about rental cars having them. We had no problems using our credit card on the autoroutes last spring in Provence and the Perigord/Dordogne regions. Nor in 2017 in other parts of France. It took just a minute or so to use our card for the tolls. Check out your itinerary on the Via Michelin website to see if you need to take any toll roads at all.
Bon voyage!
