We are trying to figure out the best way to get from Chamonix to Gordes in the Provence region.
Our current plan is to rent a car in Chamonix and drop it 5 days later in Nice but it's pricey.
Would it make more sense to take a train from Chamonix to Avignon and spend a night there and rent a car the following day? There are at least three train connections and it takes a little over 6 hours. But renting cars from Avignon are cheaper.
I just don't know what makes the most sense. I would appreciate any advice!

Maybe look at renting from Geneva Airport (French Side), and just take the bus or a shuttle from Chamonix to GVA.

Where are you going after Nice?
You could perhaps flip the trip around a little: take a shuttle from Chamonix to Geneva Airport, fly to Nice, rent a car there and travel to Gordes?
