Le Marais Apartment Rental

I have been planning a trip to Paris in 2024 for a few years now. I had a great apartment near the Pompidou picked out through Rick’s recommended Cobblestone apartments. However, rates have gone up signs, and we need to find something more in our budget. I would love to hear of rentals in Marais that worked out for others.

I saw a VRBO apartment near Pompidou, #1197241a, that looked good but was rented before I grabbed it. I did communicate with the owner several times first. She seemed very reasonable.

In April 2022 I stayed in an air BnB penthouse apartment, Le Penthouse Thorigny, which is on a quiet square overlooking the Picasso Museum. On the fifth floor, reached by elevator, the bright and airy apartment was in walking distance for me, a slow walker, to cafes, the museum, markets. I loved the apartment, which was spacious; the bed was comfortable, the kitchen well equipped. In the living room are a sofa and chairs, and a nice round table and chairs at a window looking out over the rooftops of the city. I notice that the price for one person now is $105 per night. The only negative was the nonworking toilet in the upstairs, but there is a small bathroom on the living room floor, and a staircase with two railings between the floors. I expect that the toilet situation will be resolved by 2024. I would recommend this apartment and stay there again if I am ever so lucky to be back in Paris.

All right, I’m going to be the voice of doom about apartments in Paris especially in 2024.

Paris has cut way back on availability of rentals. They are trying to discourage their citizens from renting on short term rentals. As a result, you can only rent your primary apartment for 120 days a year and if it’s registered. I do rent apartments and I will tell you that none of the agencies I looked at recently had the code on there showing they were registered and even if they did, it doesn’t tell you anything I can make up the 13 digit code. Anything on Airbnb and VRBO will have a code. But once again, how do you know it’s real

The other thing to consider is because of the 120 day limit and the fact that the Olympics are in 2024 months i expect that most owners will want to rent during the Olympics and they because they can make the most money then. So if the risk is that when they get a good offer for during the Olympics, your rental could be canceled because they’re trying to juggle that 120 days. In 2024 I would seriously consider a hotel over around over a rent

Now, know that you will not get in trouble if you rent an illegal apartment, but what will happen is if the owner is caught before you get there you the rental will be canceled. Or if the owner realizes that your rental is the one that’s pushing them over the 120 day limit your rental will be canceled. You will not be told that’s what happened, you will be told there’s a plumbing problem. Plumbing problem seems to be the code in Paris for either I was caught or I wanted to cancel for a better offer.😂

Do you want to hear about rentals in Le Marais that worked out for others regardless of budget or do you want to hear about rentals in your budget? If it’s the latter, what is your budget and what are you looking for in a place?

Thank you everyone, this is the information I needed to understand the current rental situation. It does sound interesting to navigate for sure.
For us the biggest part is we would like a washer and a little space. I think we would like to hear what worked for others and what is in our budget. We would like to pay $250 a night.
Thanks again for all your information.

May I just underscore what Carol has said. The short term rental apartment landscape in Paris has changed. An owner, renting illegally, is subject to a 50,000€ fine and the forcible removal of his apartment from the marketplace (any online platform). The visitor risks losing his vacation accommodations, potentially on short notice.

There remain a number of legal options: commercial apartments and those offered for up to 120 days a year by the owner and occupant. Other legal options include Citadine and Adagio Apartment hotels.

I recently checked the Cobblestone apartment website to verify the status of the apartments they offer. I did not see a single listing with the government required, 13 digit registration number. I would approach their rental apartments with caution.
