Le Havre to Paris and back worth it from 7am-7pm

I know cruise itineraries aren't great for seeing the best of each destination but it is what it is with a 7am arrival and 7pm departure which means 1,000 of my close personal friends are all thinking the same thing......

Date is Saturday Oct 12

It appears the train is 2 hrs and 15 minutes to Paris and auto is 2.5 hours at best.

Trying to decide if it is even worth it to try to go-to Paris. If so, what should we do for a. Itinerary? Other ideas?

It is followed by 3 sea days so we will have some rest up time if needed....

While it may be logistically possible, I think it would be stressful. If you take the train, you'd also have to factor in travel time from and then back to the station, which would leave you with a pretty small chunk of time to enjoy Paris. If it were me, I'd consider something closer like Honfleur, Deauville, or Étretat for the cliffs. Another option could be to take the train to Rouen, which is still about an hour away but would be much more doable.

Check your cruise line offerings for that port. When we had a day in Le
Havre our ship had a bus excursion to and from Paris, including a tour of the city itself, with, of course, the guarantee that the ship won’t leave without you if the excursion is late returning. It seemed to be an all day excursion but it would be a glimpse of Paris for you. Expensive, though. We opted to stay in Le Havre, having been to Paris many times, and had a pleasant day.

After looking at the train times between Le Havre and Paris I don't think there's any way it's even possible let alone 'worth it'. First train to Paris after 7 am on Saturday is at 8:02 (if you could even make it) getting you to Paris at 10:48, the last train leaving Paris that would get you there before 7 pm leaves at 2:10 pm (the next train wouldn't get you back to Le Havre until 6:42 pm) which leaves you about 3 hours in Paris. And that's IF you made the 8:02 train and IF there's no hitches/delays in that 2:10 train back to Le Havre. I most certainly wouldn't risk it, especially since you say the next 3 days are at sea so no opportunity to 'catch' up with the ship at the next port if you miss it.

Something might look tempting but sometimes temptations need to be resisted. Find something to do closer to Le Havre or spring for the ship excursion if there is one - though it might be way more expensive than it's worth.

Remember that the cruise ship's time in port is actually shorter than what they publish. Often you can't get off the boat for half an hour, and their last call for boarding is also half an hour before departure. So now you are looking a window of 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at best. I love Paris, but I wouldn't do this with such limited time. Consider a day trip to Honfleur, which is right across the river from Le Havre and is a delightful old port. Or take the train to Rouen and explore the cathedral and Joan of Arc sites. You can even have lunch in the oldest restaurant in France--and where Julia Child had her first French meal.

Rouen has a large, very attractive historic district (mostly rebuilt after heavy wartime destruction). I remember enjoying 3 museums there, one of them a wrought-iron museum--a lot more interesting than it sounds. I think Rouen would probably come closer to filling your time than Honfleur, but if you want to relax on the coast, Honfleur's a good option.

Hi, we have an overnight stop in Le Havre in a couple of weeks. Arrives at 7am and leaving at 11:59pm the following night.

I’d love to make it into Paris (I’ve only had layovers there on two different days and my husband has never been) but we’d also like to see Omaha Beach and some of the other D-Day sites like the American cemetery. (I’d also love to see the Joan of Arc sites in Rouen and the Monet house in Giverny and the tapestry in Bayeux but time is so limited!). :)

How feasible is it to catch a 9am train, find a tour or maybe find a Paris highlights in a day step-by-step guide, spend the night there and catch morning train to Bayeux for a 1/2 day DDay tour and then transportation back to Le Havre?

Thanks all! It’s my first time posting here and I’m certain it won’t be my last. I actually have 30 Rick Steve’s episodes on my DVR and have been watching the episodes relevant to this upcoming cruise. :)

I welcome advice for any of the ports. I booked it only last week.

Also, can anyone tell me what “without seat” means on the train options? It shows “without” for all levels of ticket (1st and 2nd class). Is that standing room for over 2 hours or does it mean unassigned seating?

Thank you!
