Our cruise stops for the day in Le Havre. What is the best option to get to Paris exactly. Once out of the cruise terminal, how far to walk to catch the train and where to get off in Paris? I guess closest to the Eiffel Tower? Thank you all for your expertise.
How much time do you have on land? It is a bit over 2 hours from Le Havre to Paris, so a bit far for a day trip but certainly doable if it is a must. And the train will arrive at Gare Saint-Lazare, so that is where you get off.
It's about a 30 minute walk to the station. There are shuttle buses but probably takes as long waiting for the shuttle, then the ride. Its about 120 miles to Paris, which takes 2 1/4 hours each way on the train, arriving at St Lazaire (no choice of arrival station), then the metro to where you want to be. The first train you could catch would be just after 10am, arriving at 12.23. This is not a recommended independent day from a cruise- the time in Paris is too short and too much can go wrong either in Paris or on the train to or from. If your heart is set on Paris do it on a ship excursion by coach, but really there are other things closer to Le Havre as this is a long day. The coach will be closer to 3 hours each way depending on traffic.
Your best option, if Paris is your goal, is probably the excursion the cruise line will surely offer. Expensive but efficient and you won't miss the boat coming back. But it will be a rushed visit with a lot of bus time and not much time on the ground. Paris deserves much more if you can go there another time.
We took a cruise line excursion to Rouen and found it worthwhile. Other options might include Honfleur, the D-Day beaches, and/or Bayeux. Not to mention LeHavre itself. Any of these would give you more time to see things and less time on a bus.
I agree with posters who say it is too risky to do it on your own! That train line to Paris is prone to delays.
If you think that you will never have an opportunity to get a look at Paris, then take the cruise line's shorex! As others have posted it would be risky to catch the train and make it back in the limited amount of time allotted. Otherwise look to visit Rouen, which I think you may be able to do on your own via train. Or take a shorex there or to the Normandy beaches.
