Any suggestions for a 3 day side trip from Nice area to see lavender? Is June 20th too early? Thks
Kathleen, if Lavender doesn't work out in France, remember you have quite a few lavender farms close to home in Sequim, WA.
Mid-June through early August is normally what they say for seeing the lavender in Provence - weather dependent of course. If you're driving, there are a couple of lavender routes, you can see them on this map: http://www.theluberon.com/activities/lavender-provence. Scroll down about half way. I was there in mid July and it was beautiful but it's very hard to predict, an early spring will have it blooming earlier. In fact the year I was there they were starting to harvest some types of lavender in early July.
And as Carol said if you want to see lavender you don't have to go far, there are lots of lavender growers in the Pacific Northwest. Oregon has a lavender festival that takes place all over the the state in mid-July.
Of course that's not quite the same as seeing it in Provence, is it?
If you do the lavender routes in Provence, don't miss the Abbaye de Senanque near Gordes.
We enjoyed the Friday Harbor (San Juan Islands, WA) lavenders. They were in bloom during the last week of June 2009.

Although the best time to see the fields at the “peak of purpleness”
is July – August, there are many things to do at the farm May –
October.
Sault in Provence has wonderful fields of lavender. We haven't been there in the summer to see it but we can tell how the fields are planted. Lavender is planted all over the Vaucluse area of the Luberon.
There is a very interesting lavender museum in Cavaillon with a great gift shop. It was worth a stop! There is also a laundromat in Cavaillon. Another good reason for going there.
Good luck!
