With the hope of avoiding the throngs of tourists and heat that we might encounter in the summer, my husband and I are considering a trip to this area. We won't be renting a car. We'd like to be able to enjoy beautiful scenery, museums, great food/wine (well, it's France, so I'm not worried about finding that!). We're not looking to go to the beach and look for celebrities, but prefer interesting historical attractions. We're torn between this area and the Amalfi Coast. Any thoughts on the timing? My concern is that being off-season, we would have limitations with train/bus schedules and places not being open for the season yet. Same concern with looking at the Amalfi Coast (I hear the ferries wouldn't be running yet). Again, not renting a car. Thanks in advance.
Base in Nice which is not just a tourist city.
You will not have a problem with closures in February in Nice and the coastal cities. At most, a museum might close one hour earlier, a couple fewer sailings on the St. Honorat Ferry and truly seasonal businesses will be shut (all but a couple of beach clubs, the trains des merveilles, etc). Through the 26th of February, Nice has Carnaval, a big event. (And Menton has a Citrus festival). You might want to be aware of the dates, as the crowds will be a bit higher (but nothing compared to July)
