Last night stay in Paris: Airport? Roissy?

Okay, we have our flight set for our two RS tours this coming summer. Our Eastern France tour ends up in Aix-en-Provence, and we're planning to head back to Paris the day before our flight home to make that last leg of the trip easier. We're flying out of CDG, on a late morning flight.

So, what would be the best place to spend the night. Paris, then take a shuttle or cab to the airport? Roissy, where a number of hotels have a shuttle to CDG, evidently? Or stay at one of the airport hotels? We want to be able to get a good night's sleep, and to have a good breakfast the morning we leave.

What has been your experience, and what would you recommend?

Are there some interesting things to do in Roissy, should we decide to stay there?

Thanks for your help.

I was on the Eastern France tour in October. I opted to spend most of the day the tour ended in Aix, then take the TGV from the Aix TGV station directly to CDG late in the afternoon. There is a Hilton in the airport basically right above the train station. Not the cheapest perhaps, but easy, comfortable and quiet. Slept well and walked to my gate the next late morning.

As you probably know, the best practice is to be at the airport three hours before your flight time. Allowing (conservatively) an hour to get there from Paris by taxi or RER, that means you're up, packed, and well-breakfasted four hours before flight time.

Unless the flight is in the afternoon, my choice would be an airport hotel, of which there are many in many price ranges. We were fine with the Ibis but there are higher-end choices too. Get that night's sleep and good breakfast, then head to your terminal. If you get there early enough the day before, you can drop your bags and head into Paris for a stroll and dinner, then return to the airport.

I think the worst choice would be the town of Roissy -- not as convenient to the airport, nowhere near as fun as Paris.

The night before the flight from CDG to SFO, I don't stay in Paris but at one of the airport hotels. I book a room at the " The Campanille" (a French chain), get there 8 pm, then after breakfast at the hotel take the shuttle to CDG.

I've never stayed at an airport hotel anywhere, and hopefully never will. I've flown out of CDG many times, and either stayed in Paris, or the last several times in towns not far from CDG (Senlis, Plailly), although that's only doable if you have a car to return. If your flight is late morning, I'd recommend staying in Paris. If it were late morning, that might be different.

We chose to stay "at" the airport the night before we fly home ... it just easier in the morning of the flight

We are returning home from Italy through Paris on 5/7/19. We will be flying from Milan MXP to Paris CDG on the afternoon of 5/6/19. Given that our flight from Paris to Boston leaves at 10:20 AM, we reluctantly decided to stay at an airport hotel at CDG. Usually our flights home leave in the afternoon, so this will be our first time in nine trips that we have stayed at an airport hotel. Our preference is to try to squeeze in one more day in a city like Paris. However, given that we spent a good deal of time in Paris in 2018, and that we will be at the end of a three week trip, it seemed like the best strategy to stay at an airport hotel - the ibis Styles Paris Roissy-CDG.

If you want to go into Paris for one evening, you could take the RER-B train from CDG to the St. Michel-Notre Dame stop for 10.30 euros each way per person.

If you decide to stay at the airport my advice would be to arrive in the afternoon and then take the train into Paris for dinner and a final stroll o the Seine around the Cathedral before heading back to the airport hotel. We much regretted the expensive nearly inedible dinner at the Hilton a few years back and were sorry we didn't follow our usual rule of last dinner in Paris. We got there a bit late to do that.

We’ve done it both ways depending on the time of our morning flight and train/RER strikes that we encountered last spring. We usually just stay in Paris and zip out to the airport on the RER or by taxi in the morning. Last spring we stayed at the airport for the first time. If you do this, just try to time your train from Aix-en-Provence until late in the day because it is pretty boring at an airport hotel...

This is my response to a similar question last spring.

You don't say when your problem date is but I checked the airport hotel where we stayed for one night in May for a random August date and got 60€ for a single and 90€ for a double. We stayed at the new Holiday Inn Express which is near the new control tower and efficient tram system that makes a circuit to all of the terminals. To get to the terminal from the hotel you walk about 2-3 minutes to the tram which comes about every 5 minutes. There is also a new Mercure at this tram stop. Both hotels have been open for about 6 months. Our taxi driver was at first reluctant to give us the 50€ rate since he wasn't taking us to a terminal but when I showed him the location on my phone he switched the meter back to the flat rate. He said he'd never been to that street/location yet but was happy to find it. I would gladly stay there again although the hotel and staff were working out some of their newness issues.
EDIT: there are 2 HIE hotels at CDG. The inexpensive one is the NEW hotel at 5 Rue du Voyageur.

Thanks, everyone. I'm tied up most of today, but I'll start checking out some of your recommendations tomorrow. I love the idea of taking the train from Aix straight to the airport, then checking into a convenient hotel. I don't know yet what time we'll be arriving in Paris; I haven't gotten as far as checking train schedules.

And I love the idea of one last lovely unhurried romantic evening in Paris - janettravels' post caught my eye for sure. And LIZinPA, I may send you a PM about travel arrangements from Aix. But not today.

Thanks, all.

You might also look at the Citizen M Hotel at CDG airport. We stayed at one at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. It’s no frills but perfectly comfortable.

When I fly back, it's going to be invariably from one of three airports...Paris CDG, London (LHR or Gatwick), or Frankfurt. Only out of Paris do I stay the night before at the airport.

In Frankfurt it's at small hotel close to the Hbf., whereas in London, the B&B is in KIngs Cross.

Okay, I'm reporting back. I checked out all the recommended hotels, and went with the Ibis Roissy CDG Paris Nord 2, from Rick's book. We're flying in high season, and the price difference was significant. We have a double room with breakfast, can be changed up to 6:00 p.m. the day of arrival, pay at hotel, for €120.46.

Since it's cancellable, that gives us some breathing room. If I find a nicer place or one closer to the airport for a price with which we are comfortable, I can grab it.

Thanks to all of you for your help. LIZinPA, I'm still going to touch base about travel from Aix.
