I have two nights to spend between Reims and Paris. I love Cathedrals and was thinking of one night each in Laon and Amiens. RS doesn't cover this part of France. Are these towns worth a short visit?
Both places are certainly worth a visit. Laon is a rather quiet walled hilltop town with also a nice view over the surrounding landscape. Amiens is considerably larger and also more lively.
As far as I know the Cathedral there is the biggest and considered as one of the most beautiful. The one of Laon is older and still with the Romanesque style elements has a lesser pure Gothic style. It is also welknown for the life-size figures of the sixteen oxen.
Being in Paris put the one of St. Denis on your list too. Not only the birthplace of the Gothic style, but also the burial place of the French monarchs since the 7th century.
