Has anyone cycled the section between Cluny and Macon? We are looking for easy scenic riding with a few wineries along the way. We would like to stay as close to Geneva as possible. Thanks!!
There are lots of voies vertes in Burgundy, but I assume the one you're referring to is this one: https://www.francevelotourisme.com/base-1/etapes/voie-verte-bourgogne-du-sud-cluny-macon.
We haven't biked it yet -- we've been focusing on the voie verte heading down to Roanne from Saint Yan and another one along the Canal du Centre (which, early in WWII, was the original boundary between occupied France and non-occupied France). I live about a 2 minute walk from the canal, in what once was occupied France.
The area you're contemplating is hilly (hence all the vineyards) and scenic, especially in Spring through Fall. Less so in the winter.
You can add layers to the map in the link above by clicking on the boxes. I think the one you would want is tasting (dégustation). It shows lots of opportunities.
My thought is the area is generally rolling hills, a lot of short but somewhat steep ups and downs. If I were mapping it out, I'd look for something along a river. As a general rule along a river is only a gradual but continual slope. The easiest is to go down river.
I see from the map of the route in the first comment that it goes through La Roche Vineuse. A little outside the center is Chateau de la Greffiere, a very good Maconnais winery that we visited last month and a year ago. It's worth a stop, and they have a little wine museum there.
