La Rochelle area: worth seeing for several days?

Friends, in mid-May after @ 7 days in Normandy, we're considering a trip to La Rochelle on the west coast. (My Huguenot ancestors were from there 'tho it's been a while since the 1680s!) Can anyone provide guidance on a 3-day visit to that area, or would remaining in Normandy be a more interesting choice? We enjoy history, art, architecture, walking and a boat ride. Earlier we will be based in Rouen, visiting nearby small cities and the Normandy coast. We've already seen the landing beaches and the Loire Valley. Finally, we don't wish to drive and will use public transport and hire local day-trip guides (not lined up yet) for some of our trip. Thanks very much for your input and suggestions!

I love, love La Rochelle! We stayed there for 3 nights last year. One day we went to neighboring Île de Ré, renting bikes and riding around the whole island. The other 2 days we explored La Rochelle. We stayed at Maisons du Monde Hotel and Suites in the old town. We can't wait to go back to this charming town!

Hi Yes, La Rochelle is definitely worth a visit, as are Île de Ré and Île d'Aix. For Île d'Aix, you should check if there are boats departing from La Rochelle when you're there. For Île de Ré, you can simply take the bus, or even go by bike, preferably an electric one, from La Rochelle. The ferry, called "le bus de mer" (the sea bus), which runs between the Old Port and the Marina des Minimes, also offers a lovely view of the harbor entrance and access to Plage des Minimes. In May, the water will still be quite chilly, but not cold.

We absolutely loved La Rochelle. Stayed at a former "hôtel particulier" called Le Champlain. It was gorgeous. There are some great museums and it's just a beautiful place.
