la Fete nacionale/Bastille Day

My family of 5 (3 teenage daughters) will be in Normandy or a few days around this coming July 14. Current plans are to stay overnight on Mont St. Michel the night of the 14th. Any thoughts on whether that would be a good place to spend that holiday or recommendations for other locations in the Normandy area that would be particularly good to spend that night?

I can't speak to staying on MSM for la Fête Nationale, but I will say two things:

  1. Staying on Mont-Saint-Michel is wonderful, and it is nothing like being there during the day with the crush of tourists. You should do it some time.

  2. However, there are very few French people who live on the island (maybe 20–30?). It is really just tourists, and a handful of workers. So if you are looking for a place to "celebrate with the French," I would guess that isn't likely to be it. There may be something geared for tourists that date, but if it were me, I would prefer to be somewhere where the French are actually celebrating their own holiday—i.e., a place with a bunch of French people (not just a bunch of tourists).

Like I say, I haven't been there on that date. If I'm wrong, I hope someone corrects me.

Thanks PharmerPhil - good thought on the tourist v. local angle for July 14.

We are currently scheduled to be in Bayeux on Saturday night July 13, and I think their celebration of Fete Nationale and associated fireworks will be going on that night, which would be perfect.

We're definitely going to spend a night on MSM but I'll look at the schedule in light of your thought. Appreciate it.
