L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue Sunday market

Hi,

I'm reading Rick Steves' Provence & the French Riviera and it mentions a huge Sunday market. My wife & I will be there on Easter Sunday, though, and as such I am wondering if the market is still held on that holiday.

Thank you,

Bruce

Yes ...there is a market on Easter Sunday. It is a little different than the usual Sunday market. It has more antiques and slightly less food, etc. This is called the foire de antiques or antiques fair. It is a big deal with people coming from all over the world. What makes it most interesting is that , in addition to the streets, there are little pathways all over Isle with very neat antique shops too. There are many neat little restaurants in the alleyways, too. It will be crowded. Parking will be a problem. This is what we do..although we usually go several days ahead...it is a neat town even without the markets. We stay at the Hotel Nevons. it is nice and clean and, most importantly, has its own parking lot which is gated and only patrons can stay there. We stay there and keep the car parked and walk around the town.Very easy. If I were you I would come in a day or two ahead of time.We actually use Isle as one of our bases for traveling around Provence....easy to get in and out of and many neat little shops in back alleys all over..nice restaurants along the river...There is more to Isle than one might think...we have stayed there for years and keep finding new little areas we have never seen.

Hi Bruce,

I agree with Jane, the Easter antiques market is BIG, it will be a mad house with regard to parking and crowds so get there early or stay in town or nearby.

Below is from the web site - http://www.avignon-et-provence.com/tourism/isle-sur-la-sorgue/antiques.htm#.VM7p_NKUfTo

Over the years, the antique market has become the international calling card for Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Incontestably, the International Antiques Fair that takes place twice a year, at Easter and in the month of August, has found itself a place in the sun within the greater, highly prized European antiques market. To such a degree that Isle-sur-la-Sorgue forms today, with London and Paris, one of the cardinal points of the golden triangle.

Thank you both!

We could not get reservations in town and are staying Friday through Sunday night at the Best Western near town. But your advice is appreciated and we will get into town on Sunday as early as possible...

If you get there very early there is a great parking lot across the street from the Hotel Nevons. It used to be free but could be a charge for that event. Somewhere we got a brochure that was free that showed all the back alleys with the shops etc.Maybe at the Nevons. Do explore ....there are many neat little shops stuck back in little wooded parks and then there is the whole neat town with wonderful shops and little cafés and sweet shops.
