June in Alsace

Planning a trip from Italy to Alsace region for about ten days in early June. Am particularly interested in the Route des Vines area. Will probably stay in Colmar, as Rick's video suggests. Any ideas at all re accommodations, food, points of interest, festivals...anything you experienced folk have to offer...would love to hear it! Grazie. Linda

I would not stay in Colmar rather in a wine village on the route du Vins. Look at Riquewehr, Kaysersburg, Eguisheim. Colmar was our least favorite place in all of Alsace. Of course, also stay in beautiful Strasbourg a few nights.

Completely disagree with Rick on staying in Colmar. It is a cute town with some interesting sites. But the real treasures of the Alsace is the half timbered villages. We did stay one night in Colmar to visit the city and then we moved onto Eguisheim for three days. It's not as central as some of the others but it's beautiful and fun. We stayed on the main street in town in a BnB that was part of a winery. We drove the Route des Vines to get to the little towns and the views were fantastic. In Eguisheim we loved Caveau du heuhaus and A La ville de Nancy resturants. Make reservations! I would just stop at any (or all) the towns that are convenient on your drive. We liked Ribeauville, Kayersburg, Riquewihr(suggest getting there right away in the morning to get convenient parking) In Eguisheim we stayed at Le Hameau d'Eguisheim, http://www.hameau-eguisheim.com/en/, In Colmar we also stayed in a winery. Maison Martin Jund, it's quirky, with a great breakfast, clean, great value.

We've visited Alsace several times, including a 1 week stay in Riquewihr, which was great. Several of the other villages mentioned in these comments would also be a good choice. I liked Colmar, but I would not choose it for a long-stay base. The same with Strasbourg.

I was in Burgundy for a few days, then Alsace. I stayed in Eguisheim for 3 nights and loved exploring the villages on the Route des Vins, also the castle ruins (Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg) and nearby Monkey Mountain (preserve for a large colony of Macaque monkeys, aka Barbary apes). I'd been to Colmar for the Xmas markets, so I only spent about 1/2 day there. It's much better to stay in one of the villages. The drive in and out of Colmar (a pretty good sized city) is a pain, and a lot more expensive for lodging. Then I drove to Strasbourg and dropped the car. 2 days in Strasbourg was perfect for me. A car would have been a hindrance.

We enjoyed our stay in the town of Barr.
Lovely old town of about 6000 people.
The main part of town was rebuilt in the 16th century and is quite beautiful.
Huge vinyards in most directions with sweet little wine villages nestled in among them.
The forested Vosges mountains roll down to the outskirts of town. In those forests are 3 fantastic 13th C castle ruins that are free to explore. Higher up is Mount Ste Odile topped by a popular abbey. There are remnants of religious structures going back to the 7th C up there.
It is a fairly quiet town tourist wise. Nearby Obernai seems more popular with the tourists.
It is a short train trip from Barr to Strasbourg.
We stayed at the friendly Maison Rouge and ate most nights at the outdoor restaurant there.

A good alternative to the more popular tourist hotspots in the region.

We stayed in Ribeauville for a week a few years ago - loved it. You can walk to many of the smaller towns and wineries nearby. Wonderful area with amazing food and wine. We stayed in a gite right in town and liked it's proximity to many good restaurants and wineries. Ribeauville is a walled town, so very unique and picturesque.

Yes to Alsace! But probably a No to Colmar.

We stayed in Colmar for 10 days a couple of years ago, and honestly probably wouldn't do it again. The wine villages themselves have more real charm, and Strasbourg has more to do as longer-stay hub. Ribeauville was our favorite wine village. You can hike into the mountains or walk to other wine villages. I would check AirBNB and see what you can find. We also loved Kaysersburg--but honestly, any of these villages would be a great place to stay.
