Sarlat

My wife and I are planning to spend sometime in Sarlat and the Dordogne area of France.
We are travelling by train from Paris to Sarlat on 11 September 2014.
It has been suggested we Travel from Paris to Souillac and then take a bus to Sarlat.
Has anyone got any suggestion if this is possible?
Does the bus still run from Souillac to Sarlat?
How often does the bus depart from the Souillac Railway station?
Or is it better to travell from Paris to Sarlat via Bordeaux?
Would appreciate any advice.
With thanks
Joe

Use the Germain Rail site to check out train (and SNCF Bus) connections from Paris to Sarlat. Select a day inApril as the Septmeber schedules won;t be up yet (but will be identical or similar).

You can't buy train tickets at that site, but it is the best online timetable around.

However, here is something else to think about. You will have a hard time seeing the sights in the Dordogne without a car, though you can get to Sarlat without one. And if you are going to get a car, which is a good idea, then you have other options for getting to Sarlat.

For example, you can take the TGV from Paris to Angouleme and rent a car there, then drive the rest of the way.

There are some very good tour companies that do daytrips all over the Dordogne from Sarlat. Sarlat is a great place to base yourself. We took the train from Bordeaux to Sarlat. Buses run too but be careful of Sunday schedules. The whole area is so beautiful. Even the bus is fun.

We loved Le Cordeliers B &B in Sarlat. Lovely, great breakfast and owner could not be more accommodating. There are stairs as in most B &B. Easy parking in free lot half block away, it was comfortable and quiet. We took the TGV from Paris to Bordeaux, rented car at train station, and drove to Sarlat. I think a car is ideal to visit all the caves and castles.
