Itinerary ideas: 9-10 days, including Paris

My first instinct is to do about 3 days in Paris, shoot straight down to Annecy/Alps region for 2 days, Provence for 2-3 days, then the water in the south for 2 days and fly out of Marseilles. Then i wonder if that's too ambitious even for us...should we do the Loire valley instead? Or toward the Alps instead and skip the coast? I'm not dying to head north from Paris, but should we do that and head to Belgium instead? Other? All suggestions welcome!! I wish we had 4 more days! Here is the basic info to get you started:

The trip:
- 90% chance it will be in the summer (10% chance it would be in April)
- must include Paris (we've never been)

Us:
- 30s, energetic, physically fit, and totally fine walking all day long in hot weather in summer. really.
- have traveled extensively in western Europe, never in France except Strausbourg. we have done 1-2 night serial stays and are OK with it if needed.
- our ideal days are spent walking around a new town for 10 hours, exploring back roads, eating good food, hanging out, enjoying the charm.

- Seeing museums and "sights" and shopping are much less important than the above.
- hiking, cycling and/or swimming are all a plus but not necessary. we can handle a strenuous hike in the Alps.
- love the idea of the coast. love the idea of provence. love charming towns, canals, landscapes, castles, history, etc.
- could either rent a car or use trains -- please indicate if a car will be necessary for the suggested itinerary

Thanks for any input!

Also: what if we skip the Annecy/Alps part altogether, and just do about 4 days in Paris (including Versailles), then head straight down to southern Provence for about 4 days, to see the Luberon area, Cassis and Calanques, etc. And add a great 1-day stop en route somewhere?

Given what you indicate are your travel preferences I would do 3 days in Paris... head on the fast train to Avignon and rent a car and let the rest unfold. You can do provence, the Carmague (great area and beautiful beach town) villages, etc. (St. Remy, Arles, LeBaux, Isle sourge de la sur, Vancluse , etc.) You can hit the coast (favorite beach town Ste. Maxime) You can make the most of your time by having a car and not waiting for buses, trains. That is how I always travel this area and love just taking whatever turn in the road looks interesting. I have been here often in summer, both with and without reservations. Granted, some more popular hotels will be filled, but I have always found a place to stay even when I did not know it was some big European holiday when all the kids were off school. You can also drive up into the French alps to any number of beautiful locations including the gorges of Verdun. Personally in the summer I would spend the least amount of time in Paris and more time in the countryside. I dislike huge crowds in the heat and love spending off-season or winter time in Paris and summers in provence or the coast.

I always like to start in Paris and then head to the countryside. I love the countryside in Normandy (so many little towns to explore) and I love Nice for relaxing!

I think you will like your second plan (Paris - Provence) better than your first.
.
You absolutely will not be bored, and you will be making the most of your 9 days.
