Itinerary from St Remy

We are traveling to Paris and then Provence in August. We will spend a few days in Paris and hen take the train to Avignon. rent a car and then we have found an airbnb just outside of St Remy. During our 4 day stay in St Remy we plan to take day trips to Nimes and Pont du Gard, Arles, Les Baux and on the day we arrive in Avignon we will spend time here as well. Our plan then will include the Luberon, Cassis and Annecy. M
My question is since the place we are staying in St Remy has availability to extend our stay a few more days Would you advise staying there and taking day trip to Luberon? or moving to Luberon area ? How many days would you leave to see the villages? Can we do it from St Remy or is it best to have a closer location to enjoy our experience.
If there is time from Luberon we may try to visit Moustiers Sainte-Marie.

Thank you for providing your advice!

I enjoyed St Remy and was able to do most of the things on your list from there (with car, of course). You probably don't need to change locations, but a change might be nice.

Hi,
If you have a good feeling about the place you're renting near St Rémy, logistics alone should not dictate your move, as St Rémy is a very good base for Lubéron & even feasible to go to Moustiers from there.
1. It's only 25 miles / 50 minutes of a pleasant drive from St Rémy to Gordes or Ménerbes and maybe another 30 minutes to the furthest villages of the Lubéron
2. Lubéron to Moustiers... actually isn't much faster than St Rémy to Moustiers, you save maybe 30 minutes, i.e. a two hour drive as opposed to a 2.5 hour drive, so still feasible from St Rémy - the roads are slow in the Lubéron.

I'm with balso. These places are not far apart.

However, if you have your heart set on sleeping in the hills, that would be a reason to relocate.

If you want to get the feel for an area like the Luberon, rather than just drive through, it’s valuable to stay locally. If you can find a charming place for 3 nights in the Luberon, preferably with a pool (August is very warm), consider the move.

When you stay locally, you can take advantage of the cooler mornings and late afternoon for exploring. And you can have a leisurely dinner (with wine) on a tiny square or out in the country, without thinking of the drive back to St Rémy.

We’ve done it both ways, and would never again trade our Luberon time for a drive though Cavaillon and Plan d”Orgon, back to St Rémy.

Balso, Adam and Barbara,

Thank you for your replies.Barbara I think your suggestion sounds lovely and 1 it would be nice for a change of scenery and
2 ending the day with a glass of wine by the pool instead of driving back sounds more enticing, not that it's far. Any recommendations in the Luberon area ?

Plenty of contributors to this forum will have suggestions for Luberon accommodations. Depends on what your budget is. As far as area, I like the valley just east of Gordes, it’s very central but slightly off the main roads. We used to go to the Ferme de la Huppe, and now that it’s totally renovated in the hands of new owners, we’re thinking of returning.

The area around Menerbes-Bonnieux-Lacoste is classic Peter Mayle, and is full of Gîtes de France bed and breakfasts. And Airbnb, too.

PS Try the Ruffinato rosé from Menerbes.
