Isle Sur la Sorge or Avignon/Aix-En-Provence / Nice or VillaFranche

The question really is whether to stay in a bigger location with nightlife or stay at a smaller village? I'm not sure what nightlife the smaller villages will have, although I'm not looking for anything crazy. Is it better to stay in a larger city/town?

It was suggested to stay in the smaller town but was wondering if it's best to leave it for day trips rather than actually staying in one. Unless there is truly a reason to stay in the smaller town?

What do you all think?

We were very pleased with Sorgue as a base for a week in May 2016. There were plenty of good restaurants (which is pretty much all the "nightlife" we need in our early 70s.) The canals, waterwheels, plentiful shops and general people-watching kept us entertained on the occasions when we weren't exploring away from Sorgue. We found it to be centrally located for day trips to the smaller villages in the Luberon, Cassis, a cote d'Rhone wine loop, etc. That said, destinations like Nice and other Cote d'Azur sites might be too far for day trips from Sorgue. Your other options may make more sense depending on your specific interests and geography.

Will you have a car?

We enjoyed our stay in L'Isle sur la Sorgue as well as our stay in Avignon. They are very different.

I guess your decision really depends on what you want to do & see.
We liked the charm of a small town (L'Isle); peaceful, cute shops, good restaurants, amazing ice cream & antique shops (open on weekends only)

Avignon is a good "home" base, especially if you don't have a car, because it offers a great transportation hub.
You can easily travel via train or bus to various cities & towns in the area, or take the TGV all the way to Paris!

Enjoy your trip!

OK this is tough. I do like the small charming villages to stay at and the small restaurants available should be sufficient. On the other hand as someone mentioned the small shops and places to eat. Are they available and open during the weekor only in the weekend. The market I think is only Thursday and Sunday?

It would be disappointing if everything was closed while wee were there.

Just to clarify... Restaurants & shops are open during the week, but most of the antique shops are only open on the weekend.
A few of the antique shops were open on Friday, but most were only open Saturday & Sunday. We were there in early June, so don't know if their schedules change during the summer months.

We attended the Thursday market but they also have a big market on Sunday which we didn't attend.
We left L'Isle sur la Sorgue on Saturday morning & while waiting for the bus, we noticed that there was a small street market selling crafts.
If you end up going to L'Isle, make sure to try the delicious ice cream at Gelateria Isabella!

Enjoy!

Let me throw this out there. What did everyone like about the larger citiies/towns. I know I will love both small and large but if you had only one choice I want to experience the things I shouldn't miss. One out weighing the other so to speak if you only had one chance. We all can say we will come back but the world is large as we know it. So many places to see so little time.

Either way thanks for everyone's feedback.
