Is Paris Safe to visit . Will I be able to visit all the sites ?

Hi All,

I am planning to visit Paris this week for 3 full days. Sunday and 1st May included. Is it safe to visit Paris. I will be visiting with my wife and my mother and would like to visit the major tourist locations . Before that i would visit Amsterdam keukenhof to see the tulip festival and will travel from Amsterdam to paris

I haven't done any bookings and don't have any concerns with last minute bookings. Shall i replace Paris and Amsterdam with Budapest and prague.

Are there any other locations which can rival Paris , as i want my mother and wife to have a good time. This is the first time my mother is out of her country and I wanted to show her at least 1-2 cities to have a good European holiday. We stay in Swiss so , any cities and places from swiss are already covered.

We don't know where you live, vagabond19, but chances are that Paris is safer than your hometown in the USA. Budapest and Prague are even safer, I haven't heard about any terrorist attack there. Paris is Paris, Prague is Prague, Budapest is Budapest. Which one can rival the other is in the eyes of beholder.

Thanks for your replies. Well I live in Zurich, Switzerland, hence I am asking this question. Also , i want my mother and wife to have a good time. I have been to Paris , Prague and Amsterdam and to be fair , I love walking in Prague and Paris.
My mother can walk but considering her age, i want to have a trip which is relaxed yet making her relish the beauty of the cities.

Also there are talk of elections in paris. Hence a bit confused.

I will say if you haven't booked lodging you should get on that. The hotel where I usually stay was mostly booked out in early March for this week so I've had to piece together a stay, altho I have more days in Paris than you. That hotel and the other 5 or so I've stayed at are also all full. Of course there are hundreds of hotels to choose from.

If there is an incident then a tourist site in that location might be shut for a bit but no one can predict that.

Go to Paris.

Interesting that you live in Zurich and yet you have the same fears and perceptions that Americans have. Very telling.

I mention this because there is at times a perception that Americans are worried about such things because we are somehow out of touch with reality relative to the rest of the world. Then there is the situation that our concerns are heavily impacted by the source of our information (news media for instance). I found it interesting an illustration that we aren't so different. Neither good nor bad, just interesting.

Is Paris safe? I have no idea how to answer that question, its so subjective. Would I go right now? In a heart beat.

Now if you need an alternate to Paris because you are afraid you will be uneasy in Paris (and that's a fair emotion to have), the I second Budapest. I actually think its more beautiful than Paris and it shares a lot of the same character; and its bunches cheaper too. Swiss Air flies not stop from Zurich every day for about $200 round trip.

Whether Paris is "safe" is somewhat subjective, but I wouldn't have any hesitation at all in visiting Paris tomorrow (if my budget would allow). My suggestion would be to continue with your plans to see Amsterdam and Paris.

In Paris you will notice a heightened security presence, but that shouldn't affect you as tourist. There will be more armed police and soldiers on the streets, but that never bothers me. I've also seen armed soldiers in Switzerland. Some attractions may have fences to restrict access (the Eiffel Tower) but visitors are still allowed.

As you live in Europe, you're probably used to dealing with pickpockets and scammers. That will also be a concern in places like Paris and Prague. Some of the larger attractions (ie: The Louvre) have signs warning visitors to be vigilant. The scammers seem to especially like the area around the Mona Lisa, as visitors are often so focused on the painting that they're not paying attention to other things.

Don't be too concerned about the "elections". The next round of voting won't be taking place for a few weeks (May 7), so that shouldn't be a problem at all. Even if elections were in progress, you might not see any changes at tourist sites.

Hope you have a wonderful trip to Paris!

Just an added thought about the Keukenhof gardens. We have been there a number of times and they are always beautiful, however on the most recent trip a few years ago everything had started blooming much earlier. The caretakers had done a second planting, but it was a little disappointing. You may want to check their web site as to current conditions, as this could influence your decision. Also, be aware that May 1st is a big holiday in much of western Europe with things being congested on that day.

In other news, a French guy got attacked by a shark in Hawaii the other day.

Was the shark specifically targeting French tourists?

Tons of tourists from all over the world come to Paris, South Americans, Asians, Europeans, etc and I wonder they are entertaining the notion if Paris is safe to visit.

Fred, that's why the OP's question was interesting as the OP is in Zurich. Or, maybe it's just a good trolling question and the OP is really in Tom's River, NJ.

Although the walking is level in Keukenhof, it is a big place. You might think about whether your mother is willing to book a wheelchair or scooter.

We just made our fourth visit to Paris. We arrived the same day as the shooting on the champs élysées and didn't even know about it until I saw it on Facebook the next morning. The day after the shooting, we were on the Champs and other than what may have been a larger police presence, didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

Only you can decide tho. If you are going to worry about it the whole time you are there, then you won't enjoy it. I mean, I did look askance at a few people, and you start to ponder that person with the backpack, but all in all, I try not to let things like that change my mind...the odds are so Astronomically small to be in an area at the time of any kind of attack that unless you have a serious case of bad luck, you'll be fine.
