Is Lyon worth a visit? How many days would be adequate?

Going to Paris for the umpteenth time and wonder if a deviation to Lyon would be a worthwhile trip? Been told that it is heavily Muslim and that is not an attraction. Any comments? Suggestions?

I never particularly noticed Muslims in Lyon, though it does have a few mosques; maybe you're thinking of Marseille, or maybe you can visit a mosque. I'd recommend about 2 days for sightseeing in Lyon.

I've been told that Lyon is heavily Christian. Is that an attraction for you?

What I loved about Lyon was that there were mostly French people there. Not as many tourists and the tourists that were there were mostly French people from other parts of France. So if you like France I think you will like Lyon. We enjoyed staying in the RS suggested Hotel La Residence which is on a pedestrian only section of the street near a large square.

If you have been to Paris many times but not to the country I would also suggest a trip to Burgandy.

Try watching some of Rick's videos on France on You Tube and see what you like.

Don, after studying up on Lyon we decided to spend three nights there, and we are very excited to go, just a couple of weeks away now. We are staying in a Gite that was remodeled from an old weaving shop. There is an awful lot of history to be scooped up in Lyon, and it is, of course, a food region of its own; we look forward to both. As long as most people I run into there don't live in the United States I've accomplished a primary goal. We'll be in the south before Lyon, and there is certainly a significant Muslim population there. There's a reason for it, and it's a fascinating bunch of history which is still unfolding today.

Have a great trip!

Definitely spend some time in Lyon, the gastronomique capital of France. Excellent restos with traditional (Quenelles at Café des Fédérations) and nuveau cuisines - including Paul Bocuse! The cathedral and basilica, Lumiere Museum, Museum of Deportation are all interesting as are the Roman ruins and Museum and, of course the Vieux Lyon. Sandwiched between the Rhone and Saone rivers, Presqu'île - the old city center - is a delight to explore. Take the walking tour in Rick's guidebook. Visit the open-air market along the Rhone. As the second largest metro area in France, it has a lot to offer - don't miss it.

Thanks to all (except Norma) for the helpful responses. I have done some further reading and if I can convince family to leave Paris we will go.
And Norma...no place here for snarky PC remarks!

I think you were fair game after your comment regarding Muslims-which was decidedly un-PC, and somewhat offensive, in my opinion. Furthermore, I suspect it is accurate to say there are a lot of Christians in Lyon, and you were inquiring as to demographics. Travel, for me, is largely about finding people who are not like me. History is a great teacher; enjoy Lyon!

Indeed. When I visited Lyon, I had no problem with the Muslims, but I was deeply offended by the far-right Catholic stickers plastered all over the Fourviere that explicitly equated abortion with the Nazi occupation.

I'd add The Museum of Miniatures in Vieux Lyon. A fascinating, quirky museum. Otherwise, I'd second most of the other suggestions.
