Is it worth it to spend 3 days in Chamonix (in a 10-day trip to France)?

My husband and I are dying to visit Chamonix to gaze on Mont Blanc, hike a trail or two, and see the Mer de Glace -- a kind of sampler until we can plan a longer trip to hike the Tour du Mont Blanc. We only have 9 days total on this trip in mid-June. We'll also have our kids (teens) who will be visiting France for the first time.

My current plan is 4 days in Paris > 3 days Chamonix > 2 days Paris.

I'm worried we'll be spending too much time on trains/traveling to make this Chamonix side-trip worthwhile. But we also can't spend the entire 9 days in Paris -- we'll need our outdoor/nature fix. Thoughts?

Thanks for your advice!

Chamonix was one of my favorite stops on the villages and vineyards tour. There are plenty of hikes you can take, or you can take the gondola across to Italy for a day and then hike back down. There is also wonderful food in the area. When you say three days and Chamonix one day is probably your arrive day and one is probably your leave day, but you won’t regret the side trip.

Is there any way you could land in Geneva, and leave from Paris?
Or travel straight to Chamonix upon arrival in Paris?
This will avoid having two separate stays in Paris, and two travel days mid-trip.

Balso's suggestion to fly into Geneva and out of Paris makes absolute sense It makes better use of your time , and with recently completed rail upgrades between Geneva and Chamoniix ( CEVA rail ) it would be best . I have been to Chamonix several times , the place is charming and beautiful !

Thanks for that idea, Balso. I hadn't thought about it as an option. I'm not sure I change my flights now, but I'll definitely call the airline to check. Thanks Anne & Steven, too, for confirming that I'm not crazy for wanting to make this work

I already have a 1-night reservation at Refuge de Montenvers, so I'm crossing my fingers I can make this side trip work w/out spending too much time traveling (and not enough time "being there").

Another, less ideal, option would be to book a separate flight from CDG to Geneva. This would not be a "protected" connection so I would allow 5 hours as a buffer for delays, but it would still get you to Chamonix that same evening.

As for the Mer de glace / Montenvers: after a good start, the winter is not exceptionally snowy, so expect to be shocked at the sight of a rapidly-retreating glacier. Still an impressive sight, but very spooky. A great place to take any climate change skeptics...

Chamonix is worthy of your time, especially for the hiking. It's so easy to access the trails via the chairlifts, the scenery is spectacular and seeing the retreating glacier(s) is mind-blowing. Take the gondola down then walk down (and back up!) the many steps to see the signage along the way, showing where the top of the glacier was over the years. While most of us know about climate change, seeing it up close and personal really hammers it home. We stayed in a lovely place at the edge of the free bus transport system so traveling into the town was fast and simple. And I ate many of the best macarons ever from a lovely shop there. My years left to travel are shorter than my list is long and my pocketbook is stocked so I don't typically revisit foreign cities but Chamonix is worthy of a return!

Goanywhere, this line settled it: "My years left to travel are shorter than my list is long and my pocketbook is stocked so I don't typically revisit foreign cities but Chamonix is worthy of a return!"

I was able to change my flight to Geneva (thanks again, Balso!). Can't wait!

Good news re. Geneva! Do not forget that Geneva is in Switzerland and that you will need to check Covid-related entry requirements at the time of travel.
