Yes, it’s safe. There were May Day protests yesterday but they would not affect a tourist by and large. I was there for 10 nights from April 14-24. I saw no protests, no garbage, only welcoming people and food that was more expensive than it was last year.

Please go! Have an awesome time in one of my favorite cities!!

I continue to be amazed that on a message board that seems to be predominantly American we keep saying "are other places safe"?

After all we don't live in the land of out of control gun violence so we should never travel anyplace else that's "unsafe" ?????

You never hear about murders in the Carrefour parking lot, but here in Macon, GA it happens in Walmart parking lots.

You'll be safe and you'll have an amazing time.

I’d like to think this is a forum where people can ask any question that is bothering them.

I think it’s Dani’s first trip to Paris and she’s just going by what she’s seen on the evening news. Without a frame of reference it’s disturbing.

TBH, I’m kind of inured to the threat of violence at home. I live in Idaho. I assume everyone is concealed carry. I’ve scoped out the back exits to my local Fred Meyer.

Dani, I hope you’ll continue to ask questions about any concerns.

One thing I’d suggest doing is signing up for the U.S. State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). It’s easy to sign up and you will be notified of any safety concerns where you are traveling.

When I was in Switzerland in 2021, I was alerted to the location of a planned protest and thus knew to avoid that area.

You can sign up here:

Some cities have Twitter accounts or other social media to post (in English) locations of protests. Barcelona did that in 2017. I couldn't find one for Paris specifically, but closer to dates, just Google for planned protests your dates. Often protests are isolated and away from the tourist locations. It is smart to ask and to be aware of any on a given day, but these don't blanket a city. May 1 is Worker's Day in Europe, so a prime date to try and make a point. There would be bigger numbers, and the feeling as an outsider looking at massed parades or protests may be uncomfortable, but walk 2 blocks away and you wouldn't know it was happening.
So protests can be avoided, but if all of it causes you concern and stress, then you have the right to cancel or move out of Paris.
I did that in 2017. Barcelona was at the end of my 3 week Spain trip but when the Catalan vote came in and Barcelona was in an uproar, I decided to cancel that city and went to Valencia instead. I knew that I would be preoccupied with the Barcelona events instead of enjoying the rest of the trip. By the time my dates came around, things had settled down, but I have no regrets changing my plans. I kept the same flights home from Barcelona, but avoided the city.

The protests will continue to take place as was evidenced by yesterday's massive turn-out in Paris. May 1 provided additional incentive. The CGTs did their job of getting people to pour into the streets....bravo. I look forward to being back in Paris, even if the hotel prices have skyrocketed as those in the 10 Arrond.
