Is it better to arrive at Versailles later in the day?

We are heading to Paris on the 23rd (fingers crossed the strike is called off for May 1 when we are scheduled to return). I would really love to go to Versailles but the crowds are making me hesitant. I know it is recommended to arrive first thing in the morning. (That is never going to happen, my sleep schedule is on the later side due to my work schedule). Is it possible that the security lines would not be that bad later in the morning/early afternoon (have a museum pass) do gardens, Marie Antionette house, then palace last. I'm also assuming there is one security line to enter all the sights there, is that correct?

Thank you,
L

I've been to Versailles several times. In my experience going later in the morning, such as at 10 or 11, is the worst for crowds. You would be better off going in the afternoon, say 2 p.m. and then spending 3 hours or so there until they close.

My wife and I arrived around 11 am and walked the gardens then went into the palace around 3pm , we walked in with no lineup and there wasn't huge crowds as we went through .
