We are thinking of spending 4/12/15, the day of the Paris marathon, on a day trip to Versailles. It is our last full day in Paris. Is this a good idea or are there reasons to consider doing something else? We do want to see Versailles during our week in Paris. What are your thoughts on this?

I think it's probably a good idea. You can get out of the city on the day of the marathon when it will probably be really crowded.

Good day to get out of central Paris unless you want to watch runners and fight crowds. They'll be right across the middle of the city from Bois de Boulogne to Bois de Vincennes. As it is, I think the RER to Versailles runs along the south side of the Seine and may be crowded with marathon fans.
