Is Gare du Nord area safe?

We have traveled to many large cities, including several in Latin America so are not easily unnerved but our hotel is very close to Gare du Nord. Is this area safe at night. Eating out, doing laundry, etc. Merci!

yes. Paris is extremely safe from violent crime (pickpockets are ubiquitous but the dangerous spots for that is the Louvre, the ET, the metro.

Some of the areas around Gare du Nord are a bit run down and not a shiny as other areas of Paris but they are not inherently unsafe. There are some very nice areas just to the east of Gare de l'Est with notable restaurants such as Le Verre Volé, Le Petit Chardon, La Cantine Champ Libre, Les Rupins, and even Acà Mexican is a pretty good restaurant.

I was staying near there for two nights in September to get over jet lag before traveling south.
It’s fine.
Walk with purpose, use normal safety precautions.
I walked everywhere or took a bus to where I was going.
Just ordinary people going about their lives in the area.

Many thanks for the information. What I expected but good to know. And...we will try the recommended restaurants!
