Questioning if hotels in gare de l'est area close to train station in a safe area to stay and walk around?
We did it for one night before a train trip and the hotel and area were adequate. At least one group of teenage girls with their teachers, so it was safe enough for them. Not where I would stay for a longer period since there isn't much in walking distance.
This area is perfectly safe! I have stayed at the hostel Jules Ferry in this area many times. For a hotel in this area with a cute view or cuter Parisian neighborhood feel look for a hotel along Canal Saint-Martin (made famous by Audrey Tautou skipping stones here in the movie Amélie). Bonne Chance et Bon Voyage!
I lived in that area for six months a few years ago and have friends who have lived a block from the Gare de l'Est for the last forty years. It's not a ritzy area like on the west side of Paris, but it's all right. I'd use google street view to check out anywhere you are thinking of staying. It can vary street-by-street. A couple of the traditional French cafes have become Turkish cafes, as this is an area where a lot of Turkish workers live. A few blocks south of the station you'll find a lot of hair shops run by Congolese immigrants. It's a very diverse area. Where Sara stayed at the hostel along the canal is quite a bit further southeast. The canal has good areas and some not as nice for various reasons.
There is a nice quiet street a block from the station called rue Saint Laurent, which has an Ibis, a two-star chain hotel. If I had to get a hotel there, I'd go to this Ibis. And then I'd go eat a big choucroute in one of the local brasseries.
We stayed in the area a few years for the simple reason that it was walking distance of the Gare de l'Est when we were leaving town. We had a blast. Lots of good restaurants, a block from the Canal St Martin, definitely a younger Parisian crowd hanging out, kinda like the lower east side of Manhattan in the 90's. There are few street people camped out near the station, but they are harmless. It can get a little noisy late on the weekends, but that is part of the charm depending on your perspective.
Hi,
I know the immediate area of Gare de l'Est well since I stay a few blocks over at Nord and have to walk over to Est. Some nice and pricey hotels down the block from the main entrance of the station. Est has a hotel connected to the station. I think it's a Kyriad.
There's a Monoprix, across from the main square in front of Est, which is always handy and convenient. At the corner across from the right as you are exiting is a Chinese buffet restaurant, very crowded at peak hours. The area is one place you can find Alsacian restaurants in a cluster, German tourists, in particular, since they always stop there, a MacDonalds too if you want that. Compared to what the station was 30 years ago, Gare de l'Est has been refurbished, cleaned up, remodeled and enlarged but no coin lockers. Several buses stop at Est, a junction point for them, ie, buses that connect with Gare de Lyon.
What you don't see in the Est area are North American tourists is noticeable numbers, they don't stay there.
Thank you all for your replies. We decided to stay in a different area. Thank you.
