Is anyone else concerned about travel this summer?

Firstly, I really don't want this to become a political post! I'm just curious if anyone else is concerned about how Americans might be received in Europe and are you just riding this out? I hope things will calm down because I know that, as Americans, we have some habits that can sometimes annoy Europeans, but I have always had positive experiences. This is the first time I've ever been concerned and was wondering if others were feeling the same way.

I'm not. I have two trips planned -- one for a week in May and another for half of June and all of Juky.

I will not speak for any European, but as a Canadian I would not treat an American any differently from any other tourist. Assuming you are not obnoxious, I am sure that you will have a great trip.

I think that with what is unfolding with Greenland, and the understandable response of Europe (and France is a leader in this), it makes sense you are apprehensive.

No way am I going to ride out this summer's 9 week trip, not an option and miss this travel opportunity?

Not concerned at all much less interested in how I as an American holding the US passport will be received. In talking with locals I let them know I am from California.

I have already made some hotel reservations, booked the r/t flight, paid already for the Eurail Global Senior Pass. Preparations are underway for traveling deep in France and eastern Germany.

If the United States invades Denmark and takes Greenland by force, I don't think anyone on this forum will live to see the relationship between Americans and Europeans repaired. It will take generations.

My husband and I hope to go to eastern France and western Germany this fall for our 10th anniversary. We had out honeymoon in Northern France and had a wonderful time. However, I too am worried about what is being tossed around about Greenland, tariffs, and general aggressive behaviors from the president. We haven't booked anything yet and I'm considering acswitch to Hawaii or something closer to home, even though that will be a disappointment. I'd love to know what Mr. Steves thinks about all this!!

hey hey brooke
my own opinion, this may become political like the other posts worded differently and are closed topics. if you are so concerned and curious, any thoughts of cancelling trip and waiting till things "calm down"?
have you thought about visiting parts of USA? portland, seattle, san francisco, los angeles, minneapolis, new york city with all the unrest and agressive behaviors from others. greenland hasn't happened yet , it may and it may not.
many countries have their own political issues among residents and non residents that live there without worrying about americans visiting.
several visits we did run into some unruly protests in different cities we didn't expect, with security/guns at all street corners. found a cab and went further away.
just behave appropriately (i've seen ugly americans), sat and talked at cafes/bistros with foreigners telling them i am from hawaii & california, no issues.
it's your decision to go and enjoy. good luck

I am concerned about traveling out of the US, but for other reasons than what you mentioned. We are on a wait and see plan.

I am really glad that we retired in our 50s and have gotten a lot of traveling in during the last 12 years.

And therein lies the/a problem. Entering another country, even as a (‘we are special’) US passport holder, is a privilege, not a right.

Yes much of this thread will be deleted. Americans really need to stop asking this question. No one can reassure you that all will be fine next week, next month or next summer. These are unprecedented times so there is no play book to refer to.

Just four years ago—because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine,—many were understandably concerned about traveling to Poland, the Czech Republic and Eastern Europe.

How surreal that just four years on, folks are now understandably worried about traveling to Denmark, Sweden and Western Europe due to current events.

The World has been turned upside down.

@Kenko

Have always thought that cartographers got it wrong.

Looking forward to autumn.

We have our usual two trips planned. I'd say someone saying something unkind about America right now is the very least of the problems faced by Americans.

Hi,
In the interest of retaining this thread as the conversation has gone very well (aka not delving into politics) with varying opinions, I'm concerned that the thread won't survive if I don't lock it for the night and MLK tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for your understanding.
